@[scottyboyd:31026] Funny, I always thought it was about the counter-culture of the 1960s and I guy trying to get his small-town girl (daughter? girlfriend?) to come home. But your interpretation makes a lot of sense. I didn't know most of this stuff, so thanks for sharing! |

I'll comment, but I can't say much other than: What does it mean? This song gave me chills when I first heard it in 1977, but I've never understood it. Is it about saviors who hide in plain sight (like a flower shop)? Is she a nun? A prostitute (from long ago when five dollars was the going rate)? |

@[karmic123:16787] I love this interpretation! I never thought of it like that, but it fits. Adds a new level of meaning to the song for me. |

@[ferb1234:15458] Thank you so much for this lovely interpretation! And especially, thank you for crying with me. Just when my tears started flowing, you wrote "Bring on the tears." That really helped. |

@[averystripes:10545] The fact that you had a relationship like this so early in your life is amazing just by itself. It suggests you're capable of so much more. (That's not a criticism; more like I'm in awe of both of you). I just hope you take pride in what you've been through, and what you've done for him and take that pride into an happy future. And don't feel stupid, ok? |

Interesting discussion. I interpret the lyrics to be about a guy with a broken heart, trying to get over it. But the idea that it's a metaphor for addiction works too.
Does anyone else think the lines beginning with "Needle and the thread..." sound like something from an old nursery rhyme? Probably not, but that part really caught my attention. |

I think you really nailed it, Dotdotdot (don't know if you'll ever read this since it's been some time since you posted).. There's more of a discussion under the Marilee Rush version, which is the one I grew up listening to.
Yes, the song gives a real poetic dignity to a one night stand, but I've always found the near-religious references are what takes it to a new level. Along with her loneliness, the singer appears to feel punishment for her actions is a distinct possibility. "If morning's echo says we've sinned, well it was what I wanted now," suggests a price to be paid for breaking the rules. "I'm old enough to face the dawn" is a beautiful way of saying, "if there's punishment, I'll accept it."
All in all, the song makes the ordinary extraordinary. |

Excellent point! The lyrics made me uncomfortable as well, but I didn't realize why until I read your comment. |

I agree with those who said it's about depression or insecurity on the part of the girl, although I think the idea that the guy is in denial about some real problems they're having is interesting as well. I love this song, but I just saw the music video, and really wish I hadn't. It's all about violence, abuse and despair, which I don't think matches the song at all! And can someone tell me if the newspaper at the beginning and end was about the three kidnapped women in Cleveland who were recently rescued? If so, what has THAT got to do with the song? |
