For some reason it seems like most people can't grasp what the metaphor of "stepping outside" means, though it seems very obvious to me. Using drugs like heroin to medicate depression, anxiety etc. is similar to locking yourself up in your house or wherever, it dulls your emotions and disconnects you from reality. When he talks about stepping outside to the morning sun I imagine that he means he hasn't been able to enjoy normal life in so long because of the heroin abuse, maybe he is implying that there are parts of reality which are enjoyable, hence referring to the sun.

As a sufferer of the phenomena myself it wasn't difficult to understand that this song is in some way linked to something called Depersonalization/Derealization. This is the song which has put the symptoms into words best. The feeling of numbness to emotions and being very distant. If you look up the two disorders on wikipedia it shouldn't be hard to see the correlation. It is commonly linked with anxiety and depression as well as drug use.

I'm sorry but you are the epitome of stupidity. You are probably an arrogant person when it comes to writing because you think reading other people's interpretations of songs makes you somehow qualified to make your own ridiculous interpretations like this. I would actually compare the stupidity of this interpretation with that of some of the "miracles" in the Bible. (Not the Bible itself however, the Bible is ludicrously insane). "This song is about his death." Even if this comment wasn't completely retarded you can't pass off an educated assumption as fact without supporting evidence just because your interpretation seems the most plausible to you, this is just the nature of some people's cryptic lyrics. Despite all of this, the fact that you think a human being can predict their own death years before it happens is so fucking stupid. Love, Nutmeg

I get the impression that you are one of these people who are so self-righteous that they believe they are able to understand Kurt's every word, yet you clearly lack the capacity to refrain from replying maliciously to comments which frustrate you, which gives me the impression that despite thinking you have a huge knowledge of what Kurt thought, you have no understanding of his personality. Generally people will interpret more cryptic songs in a way which allows them to relate to the song in question and allow it to be more relevant to them, or they will simply write down the meaning which their brain has discerned and which they think makes the most sense, this is natural. You need to develop more tolerance, compassion and intelligence before you criticize other people. You clearly just want to be exactly like Kurt, you are the pathetic one.
