The song is about the book "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson. I think the song is mainly referring to the scene of the Blackwood Manor fire, as the lines "She's out of sight, he's out of mind" and "she's out of touch, he's of time" is a direct reference to Constance, who hid from the angry villagers during the fire with her sister Mary, and their cousin Charles, who was pretty much going mad at the scene of the fire since it was all his fault. "The poisoned nights" refers to the night of the murders that happened 6 years prior to the events of the book, when somebody had slipped arsenic in the sugar bowl. It's a great song and a great book. TBM did such an awesome job captivating the scene of the fire in the song. :) |

| I think the song is about being in a relationship that two people shouldn't be in. They both love eachother with a passion, so they take a major chance with their relationship that would have dire consequences if it goes wrong. Just as when a somebody plays with fire, they have a chance of burning themselves. | |

A literal meaning is it's about a girl who's in love with somebody who can't return her feelings or has been in a dysfunctional relationship with. "You're a curse I cut my lips on your diamond hands I'm at my worst When you're breaking my heart's relent" She sees this love as a curse since it breaks her heart to be in love with him when he can't love her back (you're a curse). She's in the worst condition she's ever been in (I'm at my worst). "There's something to say that you don't know You're walking away when I won't go This isn't the first time you won't stay" Even though he's been leaving her (You're walking away) possibly this is a habit of his (This isn't the first time you won't stay), she wont leave him (When I won't go). "This isn't the last time you will hear me say Bleed me from the heart Need me for my heart" She keeps reminding him that she needs him (This isn't the last time you will hear me say) and she pleads for him to take her back in order to fix her broken heart (Need me for my heart). "I saw you first You caught me eye in a sideways glance You're making it worse When you told me I had my chance" He's leaving her for another girl ( I saw you first) ,who she was possible fighting with over him/a girl he's been cheating with, and this hurts her deeply since he told her she had a chance to be with him (When you told me I had my chance). "So what can I say to make it clear? You're running away when I'm still here This isn't the first time you won't stay This isn't the last time you will hear me say" Once again, she wants to let him know she still loves him, and she's still not going anywhere. "Say the words Sung the song you once wrote It's like a curse And I'm winding around my throat" She wants him to tell her she loves her (say the words), and she sings a song he once wrote her (sung the sang you once wrote). She can't deal with the pain and she contemplates suicide (I'm winding around my throat) (NOTE: I'm a bit iffy about the suicide contemplation). "I'd shown you the way but you won't try You'd tear us apart but this won't die This isn't the first time you won't stay This isn't the last time you will hear me say" She's told them ways they can be together (I'd shown you the way...), but he refuses since he wants nothing to do with her/ they've already tried everything the can (.... but you wont try) "Bleed me from the heart Need me for my heart" She still pleads to be with him. Just and interpretation I came up with on the spot :), so it may not be right. |
