I have no background, but a question about the meaning of this song. The live videos on YouTube show Eddie playing with a lot of emotion, showing a side he normally doesn't show. I wonder if this is about Sammy's exit from the band, or was it something Gary wrote about on his own? Google searches don't bring up any good info. Anybody got an idea? |

There's no one in town I know You gave us some place to go I never said thank you for that I thought I might get one more chance When I visited, my grandmother always insisted that I stay with her. She was the only person I knew in town. I probably did not thank her, and feel like I took it for granted. She died a few years ago. What would you think of me now So lucky, So strong, So proud? I never said thank you for that Now I'll never have a chance I really care about what she thinks. Before she passed, I did have some really nice conversations with her. Sometimes, I was seeking her approval. I have been fortunate. I try to show gratitude and give to others. But I did not get a chance to tell my grandmother thanks before she passed awa. May angels lead you in Hear you me my friends On sleepless roads, the sleepless go May angels lead you in She liked to stay up all night, even in her 90's, and play cards with her daughters. My grandmother was deeply religious, and I imagine that angels came to lead her into heaven. And I now imagine she's watching over me today. I hope she is proud of me. |

I think xpankfrisst nailed it. I had a relative who went to rehab. These lyrics reflect his experience very well, especially a very deep feeling that "noone cares." I think many people have the feeling that they can be "so much more than this." And I think we sometimes have the feeling that the world is indifferent to our own struggles, whatever they may be. Oops! Am I also indifferent to the struggles of my fellow man? BBUCommander has some brilliant observations as well. My wife and I both "escaped" small towns and met each other in the big city. She got into a prestigious school, wrote a very successful blog, ran marathons, and travelled the world. When she visited her home town, people just asked her when she was going to get a real life: i.e. get married and have children. I had a similar experience. During college and grad school, I visited my home town from time to time. I had so many stories to tell about traveling the world, but my old classmates just wanted to get a 12 pack and watch a football game. I feel like I've accomplished the things I set out to do. Much of my motivation was to be "so much more than this." But as I get older, my motivation has changed. I'm no longer running away from what I don't want. I'm running toward what I want. The process has taught me who I am. And I like who I am, even if noone cares. And that, my friends, is freedom. |

Just a few thoughts. This seems to be about unrequited love. He might be looking at his phone, but deciding it's best not to send pictures to her. He knows it's not going to help. When watching her go from left to right, he could be scrolling through pictures on his phone. The singer and the object of his affection seem to be in a difficult relationship, and she keeps changing her mind whether she's in love, ready to fall in love, ready to make a commitment, etc. But he doesn't want to scare her away, as he just wants her in his life. Maybe when she figures out what she wants, she'll end up with him. But he has to let her go because holding on is too painful. He's trying to remain detached, but is obviously obsessed with her. He follows her all night. Maybe he's watching what she's doing on social media. Is she with her friends? Is she with another guy? How much should the singer invest emotionally? Lots of angst in this song. |

I used to think this was about a father leaving his wife and children for another woman. The children would see their mother as an angel and the other woman as the devil. However, the reference to the white horse changes everything. There are stories of Darius having a sibling who got hooked on heroine. White horse = heroine Drug addicts lie and steal. They break promises. They can clean up and come home, and they break hearts when they go out again. Not judging, just saying that's what they do. I've seen it up close and it's ugly. But when they get it together, miracles can happen. So if Darius has a brother with addiction, I pray that he got clean. |

Not sure where the name come from, but I read years ago that the song is about one of Darius' friends who fell in love and no longer comes around. You know that high school or college buddy that meets a girl and you don't hear from him again? This is about that type of friend. "You've got your big girl, now you have your young one(s), too" His friend got married and had children. "Wondering if someday I can have them the way I once had you" Darius wonders if he can be as close to the friend's family as he once was with his friend. "You don't want to be alone" Darius chose music, while his friend chose marriage so he wouldn't have to be alone. The rest of the song is self-explanatory. They used to party together and try to meet girls. If you aren't careful, the wife will leave. Possibly the friend married her because he couldn't stand the idea of losing her or seeing her with somebody else. I think Darius is saying, "Hey, you met the one. But we were once really good friends. It's time to start coming around again." |

| Collective Soul – Heavy Lyrics | 13 years ago |

"Complicate this world you wrapped for me" This seems to from God to the world. We over-complicate things, and try to put Him in to a box. "I'm acquainted with your suffering" This seems to be from God to people who are praying, pleading to get their own way. God, I have all these problems. Though prayer is a way of communicating, He already knows what our problems are. The chorus seems to be a reminder that Christ takes on the sins (weight) of the world. "Hold me up to those whom you've deceived" This seems to be to anybody who uses God or Jesus to deceive people. They hold up God or Jesus and use them to get power and/or money. "Promises you break you still believe" Preachers who make promises about the end of the world or about what they say God wants eventually get busted, but they keep trying to sell the same old lies. |
