Purity Ring – Crawlersout Lyrics 12 years ago
i think this is about all human origins, the sacredness of women, and the primal part of women and humanity in gerneral...primal instincts are not something that women are forced into, it is part of their nature, they are typically more comfortable with this primal part of them, the wild part, than men are, and so this is not something to fear, but embrace as women do...and we have to in many ways re-learn that or become re-aquainted with our natural selves...instead of suppressing them as our artifical society has forced us into...

this song is a journey, it shows our origins, that we all owe our lives to women, and the sea as it were is an archetype of maternity, as is the earth...

what happens though is that we are given a picture of our primal origins, of how humanity used to live, close to the earth, and the blinding with skins of animals is a very clever nod to the phenomenon where european traders slowly eroded this closeness to the earth with the greed induced by large demand for furs, and converting the indigenous population into a work force for the sake of animals skins...they forgot their connection to the earth and were taking more than they needed, and became dependent on the foreign economy, eventually succumbing to the social strains amongst themselves and turning on each other even more than had been true in the past...the social and ecological fabric was upset by this and so they were blinded by the animal skins...

then the chorus to me is speaking of people covering hills, in modern social gatherings, centers of culture and activity, maybe at the beach, maybe in parks and other places humans gather for recreation, as if nature were a museum exhibit instead of something we are a part of...

i also think the second part of the chorus, the reference to doors and screams is many fold...going to clubs, amusement parks, and even parties...and maybe even a sexual reference to screams behind motel rooms...both part of the chorus are as if the ancient native were giving a prophecy of where humanity would go to in the future...a bleak and disconnected future

she then points us back to our origins again, how we all come from this vine of entangled geneology, this is very interesting because writing down the daughters is exactly how maternal mitochondrial DNA works...

nature guards this secret, like a weeping willow tree with spanish moss and creatures inhabiting every nook and crannie...a very beautiful reference to point us back to the hidden secrets in nature that we are connected to, if we just recognize that...or again re-aquaint ourselves with that...

the last bit is almost from the point of view of the ancient prophet again, showing how humans have grown accustomed to living inside of frameworks, cages, and restrictions, in the attempt to tame nature instead of be a part of it, it is a perversion of the natural...and finally the last part i think is a reference to even controlling reproductive power in an unnatural way so we do not have offspring, in effect, a self inflicted genocide...based off of our departure from nature and the primal closeness to the earth, something we have lost in trade for a very inefficient mode of living...

this song is as much a lament from an ancient sage's point of view as it is anything else...

Purity Ring – Cartographist Lyrics 12 years ago
i think it is more about her trying to forget a past love, and her being hurt, so she cannot trust anyone new...she is afraid to get close, so trying to touch her bosom, or heart will not get far, she has a wall up...but she still thinks about this past love, and its like a fairy tale... the bit about cartography is she wants him to think of her and be guided by that, but she wont tell him how to go about it...she doesnt posess the map to give to him, or wont guide him...because she is wandering aimlessly trying to row through endless lines of strange bodies, to satisfy her need, but its not helping her heal...he saw how empty she was when he got too close, and now shes back out there again trying to drown in distractions of meaningless sex, and hopes he is too in some weird sense of hoping he is fulfilled too...in fact she almost feels as if she is driven to this behavior, that its endless, and they will go on for months in unfulfilled distraction...shes somehwat afraid that they will never reunite, die and that they will be remembered for a tragic romance...

Purity Ring – Saltkin Lyrics 12 years ago
this song is talking about how she is devoted to her lover, cant wait for him to return to her in the evening...the cult is her devotion, the salt is from the sweat...

sleep is a welcome thing when they share sexual intimacy, the closeness is awesome, and she sees it as natural animal instinct to seek the wet and warm thing, or physical love...she is so comfortable around him she can be naked or shamed any time any where and it doesnt matter, she trusts him, cant wait for him to come home but she has to quiet her heart, but she knows once he comes home, then they will be entangled in the sheets and sweat again...she wants him to steal her lips, and wield her hips...this is natural for her to long for...

the next verse is kinda tricky, but basically it is a reference to minecraft, so she is playng video games in the dark to pass time waiting for him to come home, the screen casts colors across her face, as she plays into the night and bids her pillow lift her heart since she is waiting impatiently, thinking about being entangled in the sheets til he returns...

so anyway, i see this as the natural mindset of a woman in love with her man and really wanting him to return home so she can have that sexual intimacy with him again...nothing dirty or wicked about it, its just natural and normal, ask any woman who has been there...i especially saw this kind of behavior in one of my ex girlfriends all the time...in fact almost all of them did the same to one degree or the other...the one exception was my ex-wife...she was an ice queen...

Purity Ring – Ungirthed Lyrics 12 years ago
people always get lyrics like this wrong, its simply her going to a graveyard and observing it in a poetic fashion, kind of like edgar allen poe or someone similar...and the men in fosterly coats are the priests and the groundskeepers wispering condolences and kind words...and also the men who run the crematorium...now regardless of why she was in the graveyard, (some people seem to think that makes a person a satanist or something) she is writing about it...and it is very clever...suggestive instead of handing it to you...your brain has to work to figure it out...i personally dont see her as one of these alleged illuminati members that everyone is labelled as today...she simply a down to earth yet educated poet that happens to write and sing the words very well...just because its not in your face like "we gonna get drunk tonight" kind of lyrics, doesnt mean its evil...

Purity Ring – Grandloves Lyrics 12 years ago
i think it is unrequited love, the girl is trying to hide her feelings and wants him to guess at the right thing to do to win her over, he has these preconceived ideas of how it should go and doesnt get that women think differently, he thinks it should just be easy...but hes nervous in spite of his fantasy...she says she is not going to finish what she started because she expects him to be the man and take her...to intuit her...he loves her, but he thinks it should be straight forward in a typical guy way, truth over childish games...but she wont make it easy for him, and this frustrates him, because she is evasive and guarded...she gives him signs she likes him and he enjoys that feeling of being around her, but is nervous because of his uncertainty and fear of rejection...she holds him dear in her heart, makes everything about him sacramental, she does little things for him in secret, like playing with flower petals and thinking warmly of him, or writing endless thoughts on paper that she wont ever show him, hes frustrated at her entirely and thinks she is trying to make him a fool, and she is almost more in love with the fantasy of it than reality...she dreams of him and his form glowing...so she is left to feeling like her heart is both written in sand and full of splinters...she thinks of him all the time, daydreaming "in his empty lot", and he sees her as an angel holding his heart...its pretty much about the differences between men and women and two young lovers trying to figure it all out and assuming that the other should understand where they are coming from...

Purity Ring – Fineshrine Lyrics 12 years ago
yeah it is very, in a classy way...not too overt, more suggestive...but its really about her wanting him inside her in more than one way...and her feeling alive...even the pain of life is worth it to be alive...i think this is how all women see a love affair, whether it is a commitment or not...

Arcade Fire – Normal Person Lyrics 12 years ago
yep, pretty much says it, that cruel is the new normal...well really it has always been the new normal, but it just gets rehashed again and again, and usually this is the sign of the death of a civilization...when cruelty becomes acceptable on a wide scale...and not just cruelty, but cruelty in tune with the mantra of a cruel state...its a total psychology that is enforced and re-enforced from birth...

Arcade Fire – Here Comes the Night Time Lyrics 12 years ago
things are getting dark in the world, and as they get darker people get more and more fearful...

religious personalities and missionaries all play on this fear claiming that we will be left behind if we dont run to the safety of religion, but the truth is that the darkest times bring out the best and worst in people and religion may or may not really make any difference, but getting in line in queue seems to be the latest trend...when its the real righteous that tend to think outside the box and refuse to be sheep just following everyone else...

religion cant save you from what is coming, the darkness is still coming...

they offer a gate to everything you ever dreamed of (heaven) but its locked from the other side, and they dont want you to make the connection between that and the false ideal that anyone can make it to the "top", both lies come from the same place and you are not allowed to attain either, because you are not in the club that controls both lies...as long as they have you believing both lies, then they have you enslaved, running the treadmill for them...

the bit about music is basically that its neither good nor bad in and of itself, but it is used by those that want to push the lies on us, and its also something very much primal about humanity, its a part of us...but its those songs that really strike the heart of truth that make us realize the rules in place now are just an illusion designed to keep us all in the rule makers control...and in the darkness to come the rules wont matter any more, so we have to decide now what we think is important, not what someone tells us is important...

the night time is coming, and they tell us it is our fault, when they engineered it...they are shutting off the lights, we dont have the switch, they do...so who is really to blame? what is our crime? simply being in the room connected to the lights that is connected to the switch that they turn off? that is not the definition of a criminal, that is the definition of a victim...so, be a victim? or refuse to be victimized...that is the choice...

the preacher telling us to look inside for hell is the same old condemnation, the idea that somehow everyone is inherently bad...a parent doing that to a child would be cited for abuse, but govt, religion, and society do this all the time...which is unhealthy...so we have to recognize this and form our own picture of self worth...

instead of looking to the sky for answers, reflection is a more productive route, and actually standing up and being a beacon, a leader, in the darkness, and teaching others how to be the same, is the real answer...we already have what we need inside us...we know the darkness is coming, but instead of letting it turn us into something dark, we have to replace what is being taken away with something brighter...that light they are shutting off was artificial anyway...

Joni Mitchell – Lakota Lyrics 13 years ago
this song really expresses the hardship of the Lakota Sioux...and since i have been to their reservations, i saw it firsthand...but really this echoes the same situation across the board for most native tribes, who were pushed into containment areas that pale to the lands they once roamed freely to hunt, fish and live...their spirituality, and balance are being renewed slowly, but the damage is already done...

"You think we're sleeping--but
Quietly like rattlesnakes and stars
We have seen the trampled rainbows
In the smoke of cars"

tells us they are ever watchful, quietly...not aggressively striking, but on the defensive...many native tribes are closed and wary of outsiders even now...

"I am Lakota!
Lakota!
Standing on sacred land
We never sold these Black Hills
To the missile-heads,
To the power plants
We want the land!
The bullet and the fence, broke Lakota
The black coats and the booze, broke Lakota
Courts that circumvent, trip Lakota
Nothing left to lose
Tell me grandfather
You spoke the fur and feather tongues,
Do you hear the whimpering waters
When the tractors come?"

the land is sacred, not just property, and this is why there was always enmity between the federal govt who saw land as a commodity, and the Lakota...who did not see land as a commodity, but as something they belonged to... it was sold off to the industrial machine for weapons and gold production, instead of being nurtured...and the inefficient practices of greed have ravaged the once pristine landscape, rendering it useless in many cases...

grandfather speaking the furred and feathered tongues, is how close the elders were and still are to nature...there is a true relationship between them and their wild neighbors, a respect, not just hunting in greed, or for sport, but for need and not more than they need...but also nurturing the wildlife, and recognizing that healthy animals mean a healthy tribe...

Joni Mitchell – Sunny Sunday Lyrics 13 years ago
Joni was interviewed about this on a Swedish talk show and said a friend of hers knew a woman who would do this every night, try and shoot the street light outside her house... and always miss the street light, but one day she hit it and finally left her bad situation...
