Radical Face – Along the Road Lyrics 6 years ago
If the concept of hope could have a perpetual soundtrack, I think it would be the piano part from this song.

The New Pornographers – Whiteout Conditions Lyrics 8 years ago
This is a really great song. I'd say it's about depression. Or drugs. Or maybe both.
I think it beautifully describes the crippling feeling of living with depression, somehow functioning, but just barely- "Only want to glean the purpose only to scratch the surface".

Chet Faker – Cigarettes & Loneliness Lyrics 10 years ago
The physical pain of loneliness, where you actually feel like you're rotting from the inside and there's this one person colonizing your every thought. The overwhelming feeling of emptiness when you realize this is love without love without love.

Death Cab for Cutie – Codes and Keys Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is so tragically beautiful in every way.

Simone White – Why is Your Raincoat Always Crying? Lyrics 12 years ago
This song has a beautiful melody. It reminds me of being a kid, associating faces and emotions with inanimate objects. And now as an adult, I can mainly relate to the sadness in the song. The feeling that you're being judged by the world outside and constantly worrying about whether or not your outfit or anything external about you is projecting whatever it is that you're supposed to be projecting.

Regina Spektor – Ballad of a Politician Lyrics 12 years ago
To me the song mostly emphasizes the absurdity of politics as a whole and the sad fact that "this is how it happens. our world under command".

I would truly like to believe that most politicians in democratic countries actually do initially become politicians with good intentions... out of genuine respect for their country and the determination to make a change. However, once they get to such a position, it seems that they completely lose touch with what they once believed in or why they got there in the first place.
Because being a politician is mostly about being a celebrity. Knowing how to get around socially, saying the the things they're supposed to say. When in the end, every politician, as every other human being, is just trying to personally accomplish something in this life before they die. Before "tasting the grass".

Ben Gibbard – Duncan, Where Have You Gone Lyrics 12 years ago
I wonder if there's an intended reference to King Duncan from Macbeth? (regal blood).

Ben Gibbard – Oh, Woe Lyrics 12 years ago
There's this romantic sort of agony that comes with feeling woe. A strange appeal to depression and pain."In all those famous songs and books"- the greatest works of art have always been products of such feelings. And these feelings become an integral part of who you are. But after all, there's only so much pain a person can take, you just want it to go away....
Ben Gibbard always manages to depict human emotion so well.

The Matches – Sick Little Suicide Lyrics 13 years ago
I just want to comment on how powerful I think this song is.
And while The Matches are just one of the many pop-punkish bands that were around way back when I was in middle school, this song still runs deep.
"There's a sick little suicide in all that we do".
I still find myself thinking about that every so often. Because it's so true.
And the rest of the lyrics are well written too (probably as deep as this band could get).

Death Cab for Cutie – Doors Unlocked and Open Lyrics 13 years ago
This song reminds me of scuba diving, which is such an amazing experience there's really nothing like it in the world.
So he starts off describing his bleak daily life in a city surrounded by people who all just seem dead. I think everyone can relate to that sense of isolation in such surroundings. I know I often feel that.
I'll never forget the first time I went scuba diving, it really felt like I was set free. It can be such a graceful and peaceful sport. You're underwater away from the world, suddenly all the noise in your life is silenced and you're surrounded by such a beautiful environment. You become so aware of your body and its movements and your breathing, it really is as if you're living in slow motion.

Jack Johnson – You and Your Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
I think others already commented on the part about drawing lines in the sand, but I'll refer to it anyway because it obviously represents the main idea here...
The idea of drawing lines in the sand as a way of trying to send a message or to mark territory or just simply to say "I was here", while none of it actually lasts because the tide will always wash it away. The next line talks about how when we're so busy doing these futile things for ourselves, we lose the chance to help others (scratch someone's back). And this all ties into another recurring idea about hypocrisy (to others and to yourself) and not acting on truth of the heart- having your heart so far apart from you.

I also love the whole ocean theme of this album. (well, it's Jack Johnson).

Jinja Safari – Peter Pan Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is truly magical. Wanting to stay a kid forever, desperately trying to hold on to that pure joy that you were able to feel as a child. Peter Pan is probably my favorite story ever and I think this song deserves the title.
Really great band. Plus they're Australian, so that in itself is pretty cool.

The Beatles – Here, There and Everywhere Lyrics 13 years ago
I still get chills everytime I listen to this song. Not very complex, banal and overused, but it's so beautiful. Never loses its charm.

Andrew Bird – Near Death Experience Experience Lyrics 13 years ago
The experience of having a near death experience. Andrew Bird does not disappoint.
Really good instrumental music and very clever lyrics. To me, the song is this mostly bitter and yet somewhat sweet reflection on our value of life. The recklessness that people have, the urge to challenge life, living on the edge and so on (the need to experience a near death experience)...I think maybe the beginning part is about how life might have seemed simpler in the past?

Great line, sinks in real well I think:
"And we'll dance like cancer survivors -
like we're grateful simply to be alive."

Fleet Foxes – Blue Spotted Tail Lyrics 13 years ago
How this world, our lives- it's all meaningless. The description about the earth moving around the sun and the sky and all- it's a reminder of how we are such a small and insignificant part of something so huge and infinite that we will probably never know or understand.

Why is life made only for to end?
Why this frightened part of me that's fated to pretend?

Those lines best describe what I have thought to myself countless times.
Because we are all in fact fated to pretend.

Regina Spektor – The Party Lyrics 13 years ago
This was the song that really stood out for me the first time I listened to her new album. It managed to excite me and it just made me feel so many things at once. It made me feel nostalgic...but to nothing at all really because I don't think it reminds me of anything in particular.
To me this song is just about the human experience (very general I know). How our lives are marked by events and the people surrounding us and all the pain and joy they come with. The analogies are really clever, people as events... This next part I thought was really great:

For every road we can retrace
For every memory we can't face
For every name that's been erased... and so on.

So yeah, great song. Great album as well. Yay Regina.

Lisa Hannigan – A Sail Lyrics 13 years ago
Somehow this turns out to be my favorite Lisa Hannigan song. There's something kind of eerie, even haunting about the sound of it..especially the beginning. As in every song of hers, Lisa's voice is beautiful and has this intimate quality.

The songs seems to be describing someone who is or was in a relationship with another person who was apparently indifferent to their relationship, maybe even insincere. She's frustrated over the fact that she was more dominant and much more emotionally involved. And so she realizes that she must "roll her heart up in her sleeve" to protect herself.
