A Sail Lyrics

It's long gone the carry on from December
It is no matter
If you remember
Mold and paper, bad wine, and too much bedside whiskey
I will roll my heart up
I will roll my heart up in my sleeve

Now it is your line
I know that I wrote it
And if you tell a lie
Well, no one would notice
And to you and I
Well, I was the loudest
While you stayed quiet
We were surrounded

It's long gone the carry on from the winter
I asked you upstairs
Until we tangled in my hair
You were never one for chronic chattering
Your heartbeat pale
While I flew my colors
I flew my colors like a sail

Now it is your line
I know that I wrote it
And if you tell a lie
Well, no one would notice
And to you and I
Well, I was the loudest
While you stayed quiet
We were surrounded

I will roll my heart up
I will roll my heart up
I will roll my heart up
I will roll my heart up

Cover art for A Sail lyrics by Lisa Hannigan

Somehow this turns out to be my favorite Lisa Hannigan song. There's something kind of eerie, even haunting about the sound of it..especially the beginning. As in every song of hers, Lisa's voice is beautiful and has this intimate quality.

The songs seems to be describing someone who is or was in a relationship with another person who was apparently indifferent to their relationship, maybe even insincere. She's frustrated over the fact that she was more dominant and much more emotionally involved. And so she realizes that she must "roll her heart up in her sleeve" to protect herself.

This song deals and refers back to alot of Damien Rice's 'I Remember.'. I read an interview that says they no longer communicate any way except through lyrics and music. It's sad to see two talented people, so obviously in love, not able to make things work. I love this song, you can tell how heart broken and snarky Lisa is in it. The ever lasting battle between still loving someone and wanting to hate them. She calls him out on his faults, and is by far one of her most heartfelt songs.
