One of their best songs. Sublime, like all their work. I will try to give my two cents about it, though all your comments are quite interesting as well! In my opinion, this is one of those songs/poems that have a self-explanatory first paragraph. "You are the morning I am the night I was the only one left at the right time" That's it. You are the morning and I am the night. We are two very different people, or at least different enough to not fit what most people understand when talking about "perfect love" -- two very similar people, that support each other and that their similarities make them perfect for one another. But that's bullshit many times, and as BornIndie said, it's just about the serendipity of being the one left at the right time, which btw is the same topic as in "Love is Luck". We are not that alike, but we fit for a while and we found each other stranded and made something good out of it, and we never cared too much about how a good match we were or not. That's the tenet through the whole song, IMO. "And only I still call you mine Only I'm still hanging on" Well, doesn't matter how good we were for one another, I am still hanging on for you, cause after all I am still in love. And it looks like you're not feeling that anymore. "Blown by strong wind, but it/here we fear (?) All that you said to me is still so very clear So take my hand The players in the band They can always find Always find some number that we know" This is the most metaphoric paragraph. In my opinion, and taking into account what the following one says, it just appeals for optimism. The relationship is clearly over, but hold my hand and don't fear, as the players in the band will always find some number that we both know well -- love will eventually happen again, as it happened with us, just don't give too much thought about it and be happy. "You’ll miss me when I’m gone But the happy music will carry on You are the morning I am the night I was the only one left at the right time" Well, quite clear. You (and I) will miss each other when we leave, but again, we gotta look to the future with optimism. Too different, yet too lucky. "And only I still call you mine Only I'm still hanging on" Yep. If it wasn't clear enough that I still miss you :). |

I agree with money83 with the gambling metaphor in the chorus, and after all, almost in the whole song. He's just hit rock bottom, he's put all his efforts in "something" or "somewhere" or whatever, and now he's really damaged. We really cannot know how or why, he's just telling us throghout all the song that he's been really really low. In my opinion, the most important verses of the song (maybe not "important" but "significant", as they are the summary of what he's telling us), are the first one and the last one; just take a look at them: "This my excavation and today is Kumran"; so he's going inside his feelings, and finally thinking about what has happened to him and what he's learning. "Everything that happens is from now on This is pouring rain This is paralyzed"; is it necessary to explain what he's saying? it's very clear, though I think that in a logical thinking method, maybe the last 2 lines would go before the first one, as everyone when hits rock bottom, first realizes about it, and then he/she says "I'm going to better now, past is gone", and that's what "Everything that happens is from now on" means. The last verse is even more poetical and settles all his thoughts, what he has finally learnt from all his pain. "This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away" After thinking and thinking, he's now pretty sure that he's not forgetting anything of what he was "dying" or "crying" for; and that's so wise. Even after all the pain, all the suffering, he knows he'll live with all those thoughts and loads for his entire life. This was not a rebirth, and he did not realize of anything important, he just passed through the pain and won the battle, that's all. "Your love will be Safe with me" And these two last lines are the only ones that could make us wonder about what he was suffering for: why not, love. I'm not saying love could be the only thing that made him suffer (as we all know that he was in the cabin because of his illness, but we also know that he just broke up with his girlfriend...), but if we want to find out a meaning for these two lines, and therefore, for the whole song and his suffering, maybe we could debate this one: he's not rebirthing, so he's not going to forget anything, he's just not going to think about it anymore; he knows that, after all, even with all the suffering, it's impossible to forget that love, and it will be deep inside his body for years and years... About the "body" of the song, it just explains his suffering (again, not only about love, just think about the crow metaphor, it's not about love, I think it's about suffering in general), with such sharpy metaphors. Simply great, one of his best, and being after "For Emma" in the album order, makes it really really really better. |
