I believe artists enjoy when people come up with their own interpretations of what a song means to them personally, so here is my take. I am not referring to "Gotye" persay but this song and video potrays him as a character and I think his could be having a difficult time with "coming out of the closet". Kimbra is angry because she now is faced with the realization that what they had wasn't real. He is angry because he doesn't think she'd understand and won't even be friends with him now but he is also equally relieved "glad that it was over". Somebody I use to know is just that. Because he couldn't be honest with himself let alone her, so the relationship was built on false pretenses and she never really knew him. He's hung up on the allusion of what they both believed was true but in the end they were strangers, so she's treating him like one. |

@sweetcheeks, I am sorry you failed in your research but just as BPD patients, you have black and white thinking. Just because wiki (or wherever your mind or brain originated that thought) states that the causes could be due to neglect and abuse isn't always the case. Please try and gather everything all your ideas rationally before you try and debate or debunk someones opinion. It can most definitely be due and overbearing mother. If you can't understand that, you obviously wasted a year of your life and don't truly understand the disorder or psychology in general. |

Oats2005 seems to have a clearer and broader understanding of BPD. The symptoms and causes and are all fundemental elements in understanding the disorder. But it goes beyond reading and researching what information is presented to you online or through a book. Individuals who are trained and actually qualified can properly diagnose people who need treatment. The origin is key in knowing how this developed to being with. Because it's not entirely proven either way, it's important to note that a person's environment and or upbringing is just one hypothesized reason for the cause. Brain pathology and genetics play a crucial role as well. (Hence, a chemical imbalance) A person's seratonin level is largely related to to how their emotions unveil. That's why many individuals suffer from one or more disorders. If you notice, many have the same signs but it's the main aspects that distinquish between them. People with Bpd are manipulative because deep down they desire the need to feel and be loved. I don't think that's a crime. It's one part of the unfortunate affliction of having it. I feel it's irresponsible to not seek treatment because a person who suffers from it never learns to live with it. That would be a condition like diabetes that is manageable. Unless you try and help it, it is never okay and your life will always be an emotional rollercoaster and unstable ultimately. |

Part of the last statement, applys to the drivers perspective. I guess ideally it's good to be the driver and passenger if possible. But sometimes the passenger (shouldn't be a back seat driver so to speak) should let the driver do their thing and they can go for a nice ride through life. |

This reminds me of a potential relationship that never quite came to fruition or really transpired at all. To me, this person singing the song seems like they've never been in control of the relationship really. We've all been told that how people should be equals but you see that is rarely the case and why people have conflict. One always has more power at a ceratin time and than the roles reverse. I suppose that the one's where one person always remains in control and has the upper hand are the ones that last, as sad as that sounds. They established their roles and submitted to them. On a personal note, this song brings me back to a time in this unfulfilled partnership where we were driving together. And you know the feeling when a relationship is starting to begin. Both people went to turn the knob at the same time. Had I sat back and been the passenger in that very moment, things could of been different. But two people with two strong personalities, just can't get it together or really going ever. And I knew at that moment, things would never been the same. Point is, people don't always need to be in control or they have to be or feel in complete control, or it's doomed from the start. |
