what an incredible song... lindsey was always good at taking really cliche songforms and lyric structures and wringing something unexpected and beautiful out of them. aside from the chorus harmonies which obviously make the song, i've always loved those last two lines of the second verse, especially in comparison to how obvious and straightforward the rest of the verse lyrics are. i think those two lines in particular are about finding spiritual moments in solitude. lindsey was spending all of his time at the studio during this period and really isolating himself personally and professionally, it sounds like he's acknowledging that his place is there, that is where he "needs" to be, but that he hopes they save him a place back in the real world. |

This is thematically a really archetypical Xiu Xiu song for the most part. Definitely about misery and loneliness and self hatred/self harm. I'm curious, however, about the lines, "Have you seen your face as of late? The hippopotamus is beloved;
Half a crocodile hanging out of its mouth with the village rejoicing"... they feel distinctly metaphorical in some sense but i can't really place them. anyone else have any particular interpretations of those lines? |
