My Bloody Valentine – New You Lyrics 9 years ago
nothing much to say about this except that when bilinda sings "just like i knew you wanted me to do" i can hear her smiling and i feel something warm and beautiful rise in my chest

Fleetwood Mac – Save Me A Place Lyrics 9 years ago
what an incredible song... lindsey was always good at taking really cliche songforms and lyric structures and wringing something unexpected and beautiful out of them. aside from the chorus harmonies which obviously make the song, i've always loved those last two lines of the second verse, especially in comparison to how obvious and straightforward the rest of the verse lyrics are. i think those two lines in particular are about finding spiritual moments in solitude. lindsey was spending all of his time at the studio during this period and really isolating himself personally and professionally, it sounds like he's acknowledging that his place is there, that is where he "needs" to be, but that he hopes they save him a place back in the real world.

The Knife – Full Of Fire Lyrics 9 years ago
okay, i fixed up a few bits, it sounds like we'll have to wait for a lyric booklet to figure out the rest, given how distorted they are...

The Knife – Full Of Fire Lyrics 9 years ago
yeah "liberals giving me a nerve pinch" is almost definitely in there. also, the last lines are "let's talk about gender baby/let's talk about you and me." i'll edit that last one now.

Xiu Xiu – Dr. Troll Lyrics 9 years ago
this song is about gender dysphoria. it has been a constant companion and reassurance that i am not alone in this, even when the feelings grow impossible to bear. that's what xiu xiu's all about, right?

Xiu Xiu – Smear the Queen Lyrics 9 years ago
oh, by the way, the lyrics to this song were written by zac pennington (parenthetical girls), though not the music. it was recorded after he had already been fired from xiu xiu.

Scritti Politti – The Word Girl Lyrics 9 years ago
it seems to be about the construction of an idealized feminine other in pop music made by men, literally the word "girl" that green gartside uses constantly through the rest of cupid

Xiu Xiu – Smear the Queen Lyrics 10 years ago
this is a really special song... i think it's about prostitution? it's hard to tell exactly... jamie shares vocals on this one with carla bozulich, of geraldine fibbers, ethyl meatplow, and evangelista.

Xiu Xiu – Chimney's Afire (Mickensian Suicide) Lyrics 10 years ago
hated this one at first... now it's one of my favorites. it reminds me a little of women as lovers. the parenthetical title refers to sam mickens, who was a member of the band during the recording of this album.

this is a song about a young friend of jamie's who had an abortion. much of the wording is taken from email correspondences between them.

Xiu Xiu – Hi Lyrics 10 years ago
This is thematically a really archetypical Xiu Xiu song for the most part. Definitely about misery and loneliness and self hatred/self harm. I'm curious, however, about the lines, "Have you seen your face as of late? The hippopotamus is beloved;
Half a crocodile hanging out of its mouth with the village rejoicing"... they feel distinctly metaphorical in some sense but i can't really place them. anyone else have any particular interpretations of those lines?
