Read 'Diary of a Madman,' by Gogol, and then listen to this song. This hit me only recently, but in the Gogol story, the narrator, Poprishchin, ends his descent into madness by believing that he's the King of Spain. He's taken to an asylum ('the empty hall I roam around') but he believes that his detention is part of an elaborate coronation ceremony. |

The album Sister is loosely 'about' Philip K. Dick (PKD had a twin sister who died six weeks after she was born, and this obsessed him throughout his life). I remember Thurston Moore saying in an interview that some of the lyrics for this album were simply plucked from PKD's writings. Given how 'Dickian' the lyrics to Stereo Sanctity are, I'm guessing this is one of those songs. |
