King of Spain Lyrics

You know I am, the King of Spain
And I know that you can never tear me apart again
The empty hall I roam around
And my friends don't understand I'll never lose again
You know I am, the King of Spain
And I know that you can never bring me down again
Yeah I am, the King of Spain
And I know that you can never tear me,

No, I'm the king of Spain
I'm smiling to myself
I'm laughing out loud
I'll never cry again
No, I'm the king of Spain,
I'm smiling to myself
They'll play my favorite song
I'll never cry again.

You know I am, the King of Spain
And I know that you will never bring me down again
Oh yeah I am, the King of Spain
Yeah and I know that you can never tear me

No, I'm the King of Spain
I'm smiling to myself
I'm laughing out loud
I'll never cry again
Yeah, I'm the King of Spain
I'm smiling to myself
I'm laughing out loud
Cause I'm the King of Spain

Read 'Diary of a Madman,' by Gogol, and then listen to this song. This hit me only recently, but in the Gogol story, the narrator, Poprishchin, ends his descent into madness by believing that he's the King of Spain. He's taken to an asylum ('the empty hall I roam around') but he believes that his detention is part of an elaborate coronation ceremony.

Quite an enjoyable song, wherein Dean inevitably fails in love yet again, but hides his pain by pretending he's the king of Spain.

Although this was just originally the b-side to the "Tugboat" single, it has appeared at the end of every re-issue of the Today LP since the early 1990s, and it's really a perfect ending to a near-perfect album. So here's one case of a bonus track that actually doesn't hurt the running order of the original album (my vinyl copy is a 1989 European reissue and unfortunately does not contain "King of Spain.")
