Dan Mangan – Ash Babe Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about a girlfriend/wive/mother who has passed away from some illness, likely cancer.

"it's not your style to be sad.
but all us here just don't know what to do with ourselves.

who needs hair these days?
supermodels couldn't make sick look good like you did."

Chemo that makes you sickly, skinny, and lose hair.

"i want to drink 'till i regret it,
melt ya down into something
that i can take around in my pocket.

ash babe,
ash babe i don't want this to be a sad song
it just comes out that way.
and i want to remember"

I think that the character dies, and is cremated. The speaker wants to keep her around as a momento, like how you can make diamonds out of ash.

Kings of Leon – Pickup Truck Lyrics 12 years ago
I think certain parts of the song are deliberately worded in such a way that they convey a sense of unintelligence- the use of the words "throwed" and "swolled" for example. I think it sends a message about how the speaker in the song is emotionally and intellectually stunted.

The Lone Bellow – You Never Need Nobody Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song so much. Love belting it out. It seems as if this girl who is sung about always has admirers and is never lonely. It's kind of interesting how the lines "And I try to get your affection / And all I ever do is wrong" seems to imply that they are not necessarily in a relationship, and later it more implies that they are: "I'm the only one you should smile for".

For the record, I don't think the jealousy is at all serious or the sign of a controlling relationship, I think it's a lighthearted song with some exaggeration.

The Lone Bellow – The One You Should've Let Go Lyrics 12 years ago
Hahaha, pretty sure this song speaks for itself. The person in question seems to think they love this person, but really, they're only fooling themselves.

The Lone Bellow – Bleeding Out Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the general theme of the song is military-inspired and has to do with duty and honour. I think that the main chorus (Hope that I'll bleed something worth bleeding out) means he wants to be good enough to be worth dying for his country.

The Decemberists – The Apology Song Lyrics 12 years ago
While I guess Colin admitted it was a literal song, I heard it and immediately thought that it was about not watching out for or stealing Stephen's girl, Madeline. I straight up think that's whats going on in this song!

Said The Whale – We Are 1980 Lyrics 12 years ago
Does anyone else think that this song could be about 1980 by George Orwell? I think the ideas of "information passing through skin and bones," and "of fountain pens and real stationary," really hint that the classic (which I'm halfway through, hah) is an influence.

One of my favorites. I have a good day just because it pops into my shuffle list.

Hey Rosetta – Red Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
{ We were given so much and we let it go
We were given so much and we're getting old
We were promised so much but we let it go
We were promised so much and it's going I know
But you look so good when you're laughing you know }

This is part is about growing up- sort of a recurring theme in this song (what with the 'were you born this way?', or, were you made this way by the world?)

We had hope; we lost it. We let it go. Remember when we were innocent and carefree, laughing and smiling? Yeah? Good.

Hey Rosetta – Red Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
When I think of this song, it reminds me of this old game I used to play, Luigi's Mansion, where to get the ghosts, you had to stun them, so their (red) heart showed, so you could destroy them.

Take that as deeply as you will.

Hey Rosetta – There's An Arc Lyrics 14 years ago
[and this could be our reward
this could be it
this could be all we're owed
all we're owed, all we're getting]

I think this is about being happy, because maybe you and I being together, right now, is all the thanks God or whoever, is going to give you for being good. Or, be happy, because being alive right now, today, is all the gift you get.

Hey Rosetta – Handshake The Gangster Lyrics 14 years ago
[Are you a wolf, warm in your pinstripes] I think this is a self asked question- the angel on your shoulder is asking you, hey, are you happy? are you warm in your suit, as the stanza goes, is made of selfishness?

[Look how they smile] is some kind of message towards the general public or media.

[We did our jobs] I should probably say here that I think this song is centred around a story- a politician, or other high-up person, who realizes they are not where they want to be, they've left behind who they wanted to be and what they wanted to do. this is the alternate voice, saying, we did it, yes we may have been wrong but we got it done.

[Ambition break my legs] these lines mean that the same thing that gives us our wants, also cripples us. I imagine beginning to want to be great, and then giving up parts of oneself to get there. 'great'.

[My feet are kicking] this, I think, is about waking up and seeing this.

[Is this a living] more self questioning. answer- no it's not. they decide, I'm going to change.

[Have I been driving?] more about questioning. I love this part. it is about coming to terms that you want control over your own life, which someone else had been driving.

The rest is really much of the same. <3
Powerful.
