| Not many comments here, but I think this a magnificent piece of song writing. The meaning (to me) seems very clear. The guy (no pun intended) has recently been dumped by the love of his life and he is at the 'do you still think of me' stage. The lyrics are indeed minimalist, but the implied meaning behind them is heartbreaking: does your new guy love you as much as I did? I'm sure he doesn't - come back to me and everything will be wonderful. The way the song just fades out to nothing is extremely suggestive - it could be either that the love feelings fade away, or (my personal impression) that the guy dies inside, possibly even to the extent of killing himself but without his love even noticing. And with all this (as is usually the case with Elbow) the song itself is beautiful. | |

Agree with an earlier poster that it's surprising there aren't more comments here. Like most of the posts, I think it's fairly clear what the song is about (a girl manages to resist a serial player when he wants her back). Having watched the video though, I think it shows an additional dimension to the song. Throughout most of it the guy is sucking the breath (life?) out of the women he gets together with. However, at the end Christina is sucking *his* breath out. So I think the guy has seen the error of his ways, realised he is in love with the girl, and decided to give up his cheating ways. Unfortunately he is too late, since his earlier actions have given the girl far more strength than she had before. She can not only resist him, but she can completely break his heart. Revenge is sweet! |
