I think it's about him and his girlfriend. The way he tortures himself by being with her. Later in the song he refers to when he had her. That's why he's a 'Martyr'. The song reflects the relationship they had. I've been in a lot of relationships that turned out the same. Some long distance, others that ended unnaturaly because of passive decisions I made. You always want the best and a lot of times you go outside your league. But mainly you want it to work out so badly, even though you know that it never will... Even then you still go with it... Even though it's over... You will never let go of the feelings you had...
