Martyr Lyrics

I've been a martyr for love
And I will die in the flames
As I draw my last breathe
As I close in on death
I will call out your name

I’ve been a martyr for love
Nailed up on the cross
While your having your fun
As the damage is done
I’m assessing the cost

I knew what I was letting my self in for
I knew that I could never even the score

I’ve been a martyr for love
I need to be by your side
I have knelt at your feet
I have felt your deceit
Couldn't leave if I tried

I’ve been a martyr for love
Tortured every hour
From the day I was born I've been moved like a pawn
By the greatest of powers

I knew that I would have to suffer in vein
Aware that I would never out grow the pain

I’ve been a martyr for love
I’ve been a martyr for love
I’ve been a martyr for love
I’ve been a martyr for love

To me this song is a summation of all of the love songs Martin has written over the years that are in the same vein. Time and time again he has written about being moved by love's overwhelming force like a pawn and suffering deeply for it. I could pick out over a dozen songs that feed into this theme: being a martyr for love.

Bottomline Dangerous Dressed in Black Higher Love In Chains I Feel You In Your Room Jezebel Lillian Master and Servant Mercy In You One Caress Rush Sacred Surrender

Of course, many of these same songs have D/s or BDSM overtones as well and I find that fascinating. Martin (or at least the persona that comes through in his songs) seems to love so profoundly that complete submission of his heart, and occasionally his body, is the natural result. When he does suffer in the physical, erotic sense at his lover's hands it is out of love and not merely to get off sexually. Love, pain, and submission are all intertwined for him in both the emotional and physical realm, which is why these songs can be interpreted as describing the surrender of one’s heart to another (which we all identify with) or the relationship between a slave and his Mistress.

My Interpretation

I think it's about him and his girlfriend. The way he tortures himself by being with her. Later in the song he refers to when he had her. That's why he's a 'Martyr'. The song reflects the relationship they had.

I've been in a lot of relationships that turned out the same. Some long distance, others that ended unnaturaly because of passive decisions I made. You always want the best and a lot of times you go outside your league. But mainly you want it to work out so badly, even though you know that it never will... Even then...

agree completely with this interpretation

Also I feel he's acting about his music and how he's been having to suffer for it evenhtough they want him to sell himself out that's what I got from it at least. He's suffered for his music and for the love he has for it. Also relationships probably...

Seems like hes talking about... loving someone and they are not caring back, and they are going out and not helping him out. Being tortured every hour.

This song is awesome, if u can't find out where it is, its on you tube.

Absolutely love this song!

I think thor's right, but the "Nailed up on the cross" part makes you think of it in a different light.

It's an unbalanced relationship where you suffer, because the other person doesn't devote as much as you do....

It's about Dave's heroin and cocaine addiction.

Oh my god. It's not about fucking Jesus. Shit. They just use religious metaphors a lot. They're not blinded bible thumpers. I personally just think that the only way they can the intensity and passion in their lyrics along with the severity is to use religious metaphors. They have more impact and meaning. If they were soo religious, would they expect to "find god laughing" upon death?

Magenta, I agree with you about DM's use of religious metaphors - brilliant comments on that, but jeez, show some respect - to your Creator and to fellow posters.

I don't see Magenta mentioning either of their parents....

Love this song. It's one of my favourite. ^^ I don't think it's about a definite and precise relationship. Like Sacred, he's saying he has spent his life loving, regardless of the cost.
