People assume the dreariest things about these lyrics, because it is 90's indie rock, but some songs on this album are extremely bright. To me, the song is about shedding your self-limitations. The reason we get in conflicts with people or create exclusive clubs is probably out of our own insecurity. If we realize we are 'invited to everything', these types of conflicts are not necessary. What really made me side with the song being positive is when he catches his neighbor crying and tells him, "You are invited..." |

I think this song is about being a good person despite having no faith in any version of God. It's my favorite Modest Mouse song, because it packs so much meaning eloquently into few words. This ending to the album is why I prefer The Lonesome Crowded West to The Moon and Antarctica. Both endings are good, though. Well all's not well But I'm told that it'll all be quite nice You'll be drowned in boots like Mafia But your feet will still float like Christ's (You'll walk on water, but you'll still be drowning. Metaphorical for walking 'The Path' and not feeling rewarded, still being in pain and dying. These lines could implying that simply walking 'The Path' is not enough.) And I'll be damned They were right I'm drowning upside down My feet afloat like Christ's (Elaborates on the first part, he's walking the path and iit feels like death.) I'm in heaven Trying to figure out which stack They're going to stuff us atheists into (In the song, not necessarily in reality, Atheists are wrong. He doesn't go to hell. He goes to heaven and he's confused.) When Peter and his monkey laugh And I laugh with them I'm not sure what at They point and say We'll keep you in the back Polishing halos, baking manna and gas (Heaven is not angry. They do their thing, and literally do not care. I like the part where he laughs nervously along with them, unsure what's going to happen.) Well some guy comes in looking a bit like everyone I ever seen He moves just like Crisco disco Breath a hundred percent Listerine He says looking at something else But directing everything to me Ever time anyone gets on their knees to pray Well it makes my telephone ring (God walks in and starts to talk to Isaac.) And I'll be damned He said you were right No one's running this whole thing (God says he gave people free will.) He had a theory too He said that God takes care of himself And you of you (It must be His will, since He is all knowing and all powerful. He answers casually, I'm a guy who takes care of himself, so I'll take care of you. He makes it entirely optional. Your existence can be pleasant, but that's up to you.) It's all nice on ice alright And it's not day And it's not night But it's all nice on ice alright (They freeze the water over, and they're walking on it without drowning or miracles. Personally, I think this is saying that common sense and ordinary goodness can lead people in the right direction. Frozen lakes aren't really considered Godly in themselves, rather ordinary.) |

I interpret this as a guy murdering his girlfriend, because putting your face that close to someone you're threatening is pretty stupid. He took down the whole family unit, so it's basically real messed up, and leaves the "sister" as the final character to be murdered. | |

| I think this is the most honest of the songs on this album, because it acknowledges the girl strayed due to her own problems, but that the man's own demons contributed to her leaving. In general this is a pretty simple intro, but the delivery is extremely emotional and somewhat relatable. Alcohol marked the point where he felt unable to deal with his problems, but I don't think it made anything easier since it's stated as driving the two apart later in the album. | |

| I think this song is about enabling someone who is a heavy drug addict. I doubt the meaning is really complicated, since most of this album is straight-forward. It's not romantic in my opinion, because the non-addict is an asshole who considers himself holy. It's also a romantic partner, obviously. | |
