Purity Ring is one of those artists where every time you hear the album you find a new song to get obsessed with. First it was belispeak, then obedear, then lofticries and now it's grandloves.
I don't know about meaning, but I think (to me) it's these two people that are so utterly in love with each other, but neither tells the other and it's hurting them both.

This doesn't sound like a one night stand, particularly not from the woman's point of view. She saying she doesn't mind these types of calls from him (implying it's happened before) so long as he wants her.

I agree that the male may not intentionally mean to hurt her. There are relationships (that may include friendships, nothing indicates they have to be together) where one cares way more than the other. It sucks, but a fact of life. He seems to care, but not in the way nor to the magnitude that she'd like. |

I feel like he's comparing a relationship to the "western way" where the girl wants it for free, a relationship without putting in the actual work. I'm probably mistaken though that's my interpretation.

I agree with this interpretation (with both WhiteTide and Double). I believe the
"I'm coming up only to hold you under, I'm coming up only to show you wrong"
Is what you'd say if you had a bad relationship with someone you really loved. I'm showing up to your funeral because you thought I wouldn't. I'm coming because I have to, I'm coming for a variety of different reasons (all except the obvious that they loved the person, despite a tumultuous relationship).
But at some point he's also saying, "to know me is hardly golden" and he's maybe admitting that it's not all their fault. |

In my opinion, it's not about cutting. I think it's about having a friend that commits suicide, and feeling all this residual guilt because you feel as though you didn't see the signs, or that you had the opportunity to save her, but didn't. Particularly these couple of lines:
"Scold me failed her/If only I'd held on tighter to her"
"Watch me lose her/It's almost like losing myself/Give her my soul/and let them take somebody else get away from me"
Where she's lost this person and she feels as though she should be scolded for failing her. |

I kinda like this meaning. It's one of my favorite songs in the movies, but I have no freaking idea what I'm supposed to make of it. I kinda thought it was about how Brad and Janet, after this whole ordeal have to try to make sense of their lives. They feel used, and don't know how to mesh the incongruities between their happy and prudish lives before and now after, but I like your meaning, too! |

No, why am I the first person to comment on how jammin' this song is? It's great!!!
So, I feel like it's pretty self explanatory (maybe that's where the lack of comments comes from, and I just like expounding on the obvious), but here goes!
So this person is in love with someone else and they feel as though they're under their spell, or "voodooized," hence the references of putting "needles in me" and consuming the soul.
I particularly love the part "Come get me if your heart is a bad thing/ Come get me if your heart is a bad, bad thing." I can't help but yell these lines out in my car.
Anyone else have any ideas as to the meaning of the song??? |

I can't be the only person who hears "heaven is a place WHERE you tell me all the things you want to do," right???
I, like everyone else, sees the song as being about someone who is far more invested in someone else than they are in them. The whole song is pretty sad. The guy being casually interested in her, or interested in her body (that he takes downtown), while meticulously puts on his favorite dress, his favorite perfume. It's sad for both parties. |
