Alligator Blood means someone who is short stacked in Poker bluffs anyways and wins. His "Alligator Blood is starting to show" aka everyone realizes he's faking it. This song references many different forms of chance games. Russian Roulette, Poker, Tarot, I see the song as simply saying "I've played. I've been playing for a very long time. Why do I bother when I am so close to losing. I give up." "Can't call a bluff with a dead man's hand." Can't call me out on my fake face (smile, demeanor) if I'm dead. |

I personally think it's about several things. I believe the girl is suicidal. "And all the friends and enemies she's made along the way, they are nowhere in her thoughts, as she dives beneath the waves" Water is not an uncommon metaphor for death and suicide. When you're suicidal, even if you love someone with everything, they're not there in your mind when you want to die. I know, I've been there and I still struggle with it. You just want it to end. No ifs, ands or buts. I don't really think the people the man and women are linked. I mean they could be but I feel it's more of a "they're going through a similar thing and they're "connecting". If that makes sense. Also the bit about closing your eyes and dreaming. Depression and mental illness in general makes you ruminate. Majorly. A good number of them do. And you look back at all of the things you wanted to do and could have done and you just cry. You want it back. You close your eyes and dream. But this song hits home really really hard. |

I'm not a Christian and I know a lot of hypocrites and people who don't even know what they believe. But this song is BEAUTIFUL. I don't know what it is. But it's just so honest and very well written. Music and lyrics. I'm not much for organized religion, but when people believe honestly and with an open mind and know what they believe. I respect them. |
