Post college twenty something stuck in a cycle of self hate and apathy. He loves someone, but they never seem to open up. All affectionate gestures are water on them. He can't see the sunspots (a euphemism for any emotion at all, really) in her eyes. Everything seems like a waste. Oof, been there. |

| It's about an alcoholic father who beats his wife and children and the cheap justifications that he uses to excuse the dysfunction. It's a very sad tune. | |

Sounds to me like someone asked the narrorator to see a therapist about his cynicism, and he begrudgingly agreed. The rest of the song is him being belligerent to the therapist, ("It's not the way I see it, man) to straight up being angry at and insulting the therapist who's trying to understand him ("The way your eyes shift makes me wanna go." "Black Jawed living room couch professor" --- his black jaw being reference to his beard and the therapist couch) Ultimately, the narrarator refuses to really share with the therapist, believing it will make him more reliant on him, like other people ("I won't get stuck with you." "Everyone's so lonely, I dig it"). He nods his head to the therapist to shut him up, but the cynicism ultimately remains. |
