| Thrice – The Sky Is Falling Lyrics

I love Thrice fans, so smart and well spoken. No name calling or "this song rocks", just discussion and interpretation.
About the shadows on the pavement line, I see it like this. Clouds dont leave very specific shapes when it comes to shadows. They're just blobs while a bomb or whatever is falling from the sky would leave a more definite shape in the shadow. Since the clouds could never hope to save us, there shadow is being replaced. Also when I picture someone watching a cloud from the pavement, it seems to me they would be surprised. They're not looking up at the sky anticipating it, there just walking doing there thing and they see a shadow and go "oh shit" :o which makes me think of unsuspecting civilians who have nothing to do with why the sky is falling. Hope that helps but your post was two years ago so I'm talking to myself :) |

So after about a year of listening and trying to figure out what this album means as a whole I think I finally get it and I thought I'd give a quick little interpretation in hope that it helps somebody. So the key is it starts with In Division and ends with In Completion. After years of struggling with his addiction he feels like there are two sides of him, the side that wants to fight and the side that wants to give in. So in Catch Myself Catching Myself he talks about fighting the side of him that wants to give in, burn the parasites alive. In Paper Lung he lets that side of him drown and now its just the side of him that wants to fight, which is really represented greatly by the intensity of Illuminator. Driftwood is really interesting, i think that "what a sad picture to paint" is a reference to casting such a thin shadow, specifically the line "in a picture perfect illustration ive become a stick figure illustration." In a painting of beatiful people hes this stick figure that sticks out and doesnt belong, he feels like an outsider and driftwood i think is saying that he still feels that way even though he killed off the side of himself that wants to give in. Also driftwood is wood that changes when it drifts out to sea, so i believe this is the change in mindset song of the album. A Divine Eradication is him giving in to drugs, even though he killed off that side of himself he still gives in. Who Will Guard the Guardians sounds like to me a song of hope and redemption. And heres where it gets tricky, the last four i think have this basic message, he cant kill off that side of him because with that side comes all of the strength hes gained by overcoming and fighting his addiction for years. His addiction is a trial designed to make him a stronger person in life, when he tries to divide himself he loses the strength and finds himself giving in to drugs regardless. Therefore, he must live with that side of himself but he must not let it influence him (keep that side of him with a Vacant Mouth). Addictions are a daily struggle, he must live in completion, not in division, because our tribulations shape the person who we will become and make us stronger. Disambiguation means clarification that removes obstacles in order to understand which is represented by the album cover with the symbol covered in water so well. I hope that makes sense, id love to hear opinions and input. oh and I cant wait for some new material :D |

Can't we just agree theyre both amazing songwriters who have touched so many lives through their words. I think theyre both really good at getting pure raw emotion through their screams, you can feel the pain when you hear it. And i totally read you on the dark but positive, its something i loved and i think they lost after this album. But nonetheless everything before and after theyre only chasing safety i think has been amazing. Theyre only chasing safety lacked the emotion that defines underoath. But anyways both talented so why fight?

Shut the fuck up dude. You come off as stupid when you say something like that, this is exactly what he was talking about. Theyre last three albums have been about struggling with drugs. While you can take every song on a very religious level, you can take them all on different levels. It just depends how you wanna interpret it, so stop acting like you wrote this song and know exactly what this band is trying to accomplish with their music. |

If you have ever seen this song lived than you can die now because your life is complete. I can't begin to tell you how much more powerful it is live. To see Jake with his arms towards the sky screaming set me free was probably the coolest moment of my life. They played this and Indonesia and made my year, amazing band. If you haven't go see them live as many times as you can because they have amazing stage presence and are just flawless. |

Well done bro. I hate when people just say its about cutting and are super vague. I wish everyone stated their opinions and provided proof of what theyre thinking like you did here. I think your spot on, i've loved this song since it came out and it's meant something special to me and you summed up perfectly what this song means to me. Bravo |

I can guarantee you all of thier songs dont reflect god. They are Christian but they don't limit themselves to that topic. I find a reoccuring theme of heroin addiction in most of messengers and some of constellations and thrill seeker. I believe a close friend, maybe even a sister, of the writer is struggling with heroin. Check out this song, up against the ropes, too late for roses, thirty and seven, chasing the dragon, black sheep, and god so many others and tell me I'm wrong. Being a Christian band doesnt mean every song has to be about god, dont get me wrong they have a lot of songs that are very religious but they have a wide variety of subjects they write about. I live and breathe this band and have analyzed every song theyve written and I hope you dont just look at it and say its about god, dissect it further and try to find out the deeper meaning of the writer.
Im not saying you cant take each song as being about god and bringing someone closer to god, but just put a little more effort into analyzing than "all their songs reflect god" |

So someone brushed on this a little but I just wanted to point this out in more detail for everyone. This is the transformation song, thats already been said. The song at 1:41(which is exactly half of the song) completely flips if you didn't notice. "This current of corruption will cease" He's done with the bullshit and hes a new man. Than it does that trippy flip sound and the lyrics and structure of the song go completely backwards. Also this is song 7 out of 13. Therefore the exact middle of this album is where the song flips and he transforms. So the conclusion is parkway drive literally made it so he transforms exactly halfway through the album and wrote a song that gets halfway through and goes backwards. Just wanted to shed some light on the genius that is this band and the creativiy that went into the entire masterpiece that is deep blue. |
