The Color Theft Lyrics

I walk alone, head down, in a pale grey scene. Every step leads to atrophy.
This body made for conquest, instead a pawn on a stage so worthless.
I saw the future as endless reaches. The skyline's promise, has left me faced with.
Who's dreams are you killing? And who's pockets are you filling?
Are you where you said you would be in the end?
I walk alone through the crowds of past failed kings.
Auditions were called for the hope-thirsting sheep.
What keeps this family of fighters from facing the war that they were bred for?
Who's dreams are you killing? And who's pockets are you filling?
Are you where you said, you would be in the end....?
I once saw my deeds grow to greatness, and now I'm lost in the folds and worthless.
Following the footsteps of heros, never led to the safe and grey roads.

This song has some serious meaning spiritually. in the beginning, "he" is walking alone, his head down, in a pale grey world. A world devoid of meaning? Purpose? Which can be easily defined as the color in life. His head is down, knowing that this isn't what was meant for him. With every step leading to atrophy, where he is at now is hopeless. Every single step he takes is only leading toward more decline, towards decay. His body, his life was made for conquest, he was bred to be a fighter, ro have purpose and a cause to fight for. Instead he is taking steps that are not his own, a pawn being moved around with no meaning whatsoever, his life wasted. I think the question of who's dreams you are killing and who's pockets you are filling is asking the listeners what their actions are doing. Are they making a difference in the world that, as christians, they would be called to make? Or are they just playing at life, allowing themselves to be moved about by other forces, killing the dreams of those they might help, simply "filling the pockets," or providing to those that they are not called to be used for. Now, walking alone through the crowds of past failed kings. This appears to have a couple meanings to me. It could be that the kings having failed is simply showing him that anyone could fail in a calling, that he is not alone, being in the company of once great men, who are now in the same place as he is. It also could serve as a reminder that the calling he has on his life, the conquest his body was made for, was attempted by kings of the past. A purpose so great that even kings tried for it, but for some reason had failed as well, were stuck in a place of no color, no meaning. Auditions being called for the hope thirsting sheep. This place =, the gray place having no hope, is inhabited by those that thirst for it. Hope thirsting sheep could symbolize christians, with jesus as our shepherd. The family of fighters, also in my mind symbolizes christians. We are a family, under God our father, fighting for his word, for those people in this world still so lost, still wandering in the grey. So the question is what is keeping thie family of fighters from fighting this war they were bred for? What is keeping us from standing up and fighting for God? Are you where you said you would be in the end. Are we in the place God wants us? Are we still fighting, as we said we would be when we dedicated our lives to God? Or are we wandering, our purpose and cause lost? Once, we saw deeds grow to greatness, we saw ourselves making an impact, fulfilling the call put on our life by God. Now we are lost in a worthless life. The end is calling us to action, having spent the whole song describing to us a life without a purpose given to us by God, ignoring it and seeing what happens to ourselves and those around us as we don't take our responsibility seriously. Then it tells us that following the footsteps or heroes, really really following the way of great, godly people, never leads you to a life lacking meaning. Never leads to a life filled with nothing but grey, seeming safety.

i love the line: following the footsteps of heroes never lead to safe and grey roads. So true

To me this song is an anthem of the fact that we all have the ability to make a huge impact on our world however it is a risk, a risk that we often don't take because we as humans strive for stability which is something we can never find in a risk. However if we are going to grow as people and change the world we need to live outside of our comfort zones. I don't think Christ ever lived a comfy life, but He changed the world forever

I interpret it as someone who never takes the leader always staying back and feeling like they don't have control "pawn on a stage so worthless" seems to be about right

"I once saw my deeds grow to greatness, and now I'm lost in the folds and worthless." yea seems like everything used to be awsome every choice was good and now in regret it was bad things and not a good idea

wow theBush... so many good observations, i have to just say i agree, after thinking some of it through. this song, those final lines that heavylink talked about there, they keep e going sometimes when i avert my gaze on Him.

If you're willing to step up to real life, it will be harder, but full of color. If you follow the heroes, no longer will you be on the "safe and gray road," but you'll be "facing the war that [you] were bred for." But it's not as safe. So the risk is "what keeps this family of fighters from..." Yeah. This is a lament for those who are too afraid of the risk of color to actually fight.

theBush...nailed it. I don't know anything I can say that you haven't already. Anyways, great song, I love how it fits in the middle of the album...reminds me of the album Summer of Darkness by Demon Hunter, when Everything slows down for "My Heartstrings Come Undone".

Actually, there is one more thing I'd like to sayL

"I saw the future as endless reaches. The skyline's promise, has left me faced with. Who's dreams are you killing? And who's pockets are you filling? Are you where you said you would be in the end?"

I love these lines...the "endless reaches" are eternity, and the future the narrator saw was that spent in either heaven or hell. Seeing this future, he's left with the question proposed by the chorus: "Whos dreams are you killing" (by not saving the lost souls).

I think this song is from 2 views. A black person and a racist person. Micah is telling the story of the black person and in the chorus Micah is sort of telling the racist guy what he's doing. "Are you where you said you would be in the end?" He's pointing out that he may not have reached his goal either, so why pick on the black person? Hence the name "The Color Theft". Yeah, I think the songs about racism.

Try listening to this song while looking at the album cover :D
