| David Allen Coe – Long Haired Redneck Lyrics

This is a true to life song written by Coe. True to his life. He is a real outlaw, with time in state prison under his belt. Johnny Cash had bailed him out of jail on more than one occasion, and so has Merle Haggard at least once. He always played in run down little places or "dives" if you will. Coe is a real big dude, 6'8", or somewhere around there, and he likes to drink and fight. He's probably one of the most dangerous people in the music industry, period. He'd just trying to say in this song, regardless of what he looks like, or does, he's as country as they get, and don't mess with him. , |

Listen this one is simple, somebody broke Jimmy's heart. Thats the only place blues like this can come from. Watch him play it live on the Led Zeppelin DVD. You can clearly see what I'm talking about. |

Listen, this song is about tripping. Not exackly a bad trip, theres just some things you can't do on a certain trip, like go outside in the dark with the moon shining. The tree branch shadows look there gonna eat ya, all kinds of crazyness. The first thing that always tells me the trip has finally kicked in is the moon. Its like, oh that thing looking at me, thats a little creepy. Is it following me? Whats the score here? Whats next? |

There was only one road back to LA, US interstate 15. Just a flat-out high speed burn through Baker, and Barstow, and Berdoo. Then on to the Hollywood freeway, and straight into frantic oblivion. Just another freak in the freak kingdom. |

The song is about cocaine because the line, "trouble ahead, trouble behind" is certainly refering to being spun out. Also the "and you know that notion just crossed my mind", thats so familiar to how it is to be spun. People who aren't seasoned to using cocaine or speed for that matter don't really get it. You can't understand if you're just a weekend warrior. You'll start to realize what they mean when you're up for 6 days straight on real crystal meth and the amphetamine psycosis starts to set in. Does anybody remember the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, how about the movie? Remember the part where he's in the phone booth all whacked out and parinoid screaming at his lawyer on the phone that the fuckers are closing in? In the book that whole chapter, from when he leaves the hotel, up past when the cop chases him, untill he heads back to Las Vegas is called Amphetamine Psycosis. Good stuff!! |
