First light is the symbol for the glimmer of hope for peace which is never achieved. Perhaps a modern day interpretation of the struggle in the middle east and the hopelessness of resolving such deep-rooted turmoil. Although Nick Holmes mentioned that Faith Divides Us Death Unites US was not intended to be a concept album, there are undertones of anti-religious sentiment revealed in a few songs and possibly here. Mackintosh's wailing guitar represents the murderous force that kills off this straggling first light. It is a tormented awakening to a death march in hell. |

This song may relate to the music industry threatening to kill off the band. Their previous album, Host, was a commercial failure and Paradise Lost owed EMI a million pounds by the time they were finished. This time around, their label assumed control of Paradise Lost's music and mixed it in such a way to make it appeal to a broader audience. This song is the embodiment of the band's struggle to exist in such a turbulent environment (Believe in Nothing was leaked on the internet 2 weeks prior to release). The line "suffering from the times you spoke" may refer to critics' negative impact on the band's well-being. All this gave reason for an established band like PL to fade out of existence. |
