The Dead Weather – Rocking Horse Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyric is mostly a narrative. It describes two characters. The first three (mostly the first two) are the narrator describing his/her self. The other character is the rocking horse. The interesting part is the third and fourth stanzas. Here the narrator describes the rocking horse. But in the last two stanzas there's an ambiguity in the presentation of the words. We don't really know which of the characters is speaking at this point. This is a key mechanic; and a rather popular one in both blues and rock music. Whenever multiple character traits start to cross the writer often times is drawing a comparison between them. The big blank space open for interpretation is what you think the rocking horse is supposed to represent. Honestly though, I think its pretty clear.

We'll take to the yard like a cock fight
BANG BANG BANG BANG
Four kicks, "Who's struttin' now?"

Caleb's just the most Southern, country proud bad-ass you'll find nowadays. That's all there is to it.

I don't see how you could look at that album art and see anything but religious intent. It is all done with a reason, yeah? Its fucking Bowie

Radiohead – 15 Step Lyrics 14 years ago
The folk thinking is that a gallows was supposed to have 13 steps (and then a shear drop). but Thome used 15 instead of 13. I think you're right about the Talmud, but this song is not about the sort of relationship you mentioned.
Good find. puts a strong religious spin on the song.

Radiohead – 15 Step Lyrics 14 years ago
He's not questioning himself. He's questioning YOU. The story isn't told in a flat first person. They're are two groups here: him, and everyone else. You know the direct object in the third paragraph. You have to apply it to both possibilities. If its everyone to him, then he is being questioned. If its him to himself, then of course he's questioning himself. Assume the vague direct object is intentional. Here we have probable cause because Thome York is a genius. You were supposed to look at it both ways to see the progression in the two groups relationship.
The song describes a real world perpetual cycle of doubt that engulfs culture.

yeah a lot of the song seems to be 2D reflecting on his place as an artist. His gotten into this thing and now he's trapped going in circles.

I don't know if you had the balls to actually go buy the record, but it was recorded on an iPad. It was recorded during the American leg of the Plastic Beach tour. All the programs used for the record are cited in the liner notes.

"when tomorrow comes today" is the transition to eternity. The song deals with Damon's feelings on the common presentation of the afterlife.

Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about everyone who thinks the song is about a broken or troubled romance.
DAMON ALBARN IS MAKING FUN OF YOU!!!

The song describes the pop sensation found in becoming obsessed over love that isn't there. How people are constantly romanticizing everything.
Manatee and submarine are references to 2D's situation in the story (being enslaved on Plastic Beach, guarded by a whale because Murdoc knows 2D is terrified of whales)
This one's for all you brainwashed lovesick little buggers.

You're all dumb. Dirty Harry was a Clint Eastwood movie. We're all aware that Damon Albarn references Clint Eastwood on occasion, yeah?
Dirty Harry the song is about the United States developing into a communist state.
Look at the album art for the song.

Gorillaz – Stylo Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if you guys realize this, but a silo is one of those weird random towers they put out by barns to store raw materials. If you get too much of your material to the point where you cant fit any more in your silo, then your materials will go bad.
The piece focuses on resources as a fulcrum for Damon's theme, overpopulation.
As like most of 'Plastic Beach' there is a mixture of the natural and the synthetic, hence; "Plastic Beach," "Stylo," "Glitter Freeze."
If love was electricity then it would flow through the streets, night after night, just to help people get through the week. But sometimes its hard.
Electricity is a resource and what we know of overpopulation is that its not the fact that there's more people that's the problem. The problem is that resources are limited and we can't take care of everyone. Space is one of those resources; land, shelter. Space is limited. Just like a silo, some of the crop may not make it.
2D's verse talks about the "Stylo" filling up, and then being struck by lighting, which was a big problem for farmers until the lighting rod was invented.
The chorus sounds cheery and upbeat to reflect the attitude of people who think nothing of it and act as if what's stored up will always be enough to take care of everyone.

Gorillaz – Punk Lyrics 14 years ago
Dookie is bullshit and don't try to save yourself.

This song is about how the punk was doomed from the start because it reached a point where no one wanted to hear them complain anymore. Half of this song is a character who talks about things he doesn't know. The other half is him being frustrated like is post-pubescent traumatized cock because everyone tells him to shut up.

Gorillaz – 19-2000 Lyrics 14 years ago
CommanderCorn is right. Checking with an artist is a good way to keep in that way.

1st stanza
The lyrics on the board are wrong in spots. Its actually "lead Nike shoes" and "Keep a mild groove on"
1-3 lines: "end of the world", world is spinning too fast and he's buying heavy shoes to stay on.
4: the past, if you've ever heard The Clash's 'Sean Flynn' you know the past can be an intense subject to write on. Here the narrator says he tried to lose the past. He's been moving on but now he's losing his nerve.
5-7: Here the character's mother who is the one pushing him/ to get good shoes so as to not be flung off into oblivion. If you haven't noted the connection between the title and the whole new way/new generation subject matter yet, now is a good time to note it.
Mom says the world is ending and you need to stop spending your time dancing, enjoying life, dancing to that Gorillaz devil music and make your shoes.
8: "Keep a mile groove on" is what they tell him. That's much as your allowed to do.

The cool shoeshine is for his neat-o end of the world prevention boots.

3rd stanza
Here's a helpful fact: almost every time 'Gorillaz' sing about a monkey, it means person/people.
1-2: monkey means person, jungle means congested environment where monkey/person would live means big city. vapor trail means gun-smoke.
3-4: The conflict between his brain and tail is his guilt troubling him over the after life. Considering he just metaphorically or fictionally but none the less forcefully killed someone, this is fair. His head going up. His tail going down.
5-6: these lines take philosophies on eternity and turn them on each other. If you go to hell when you run out of time alive, you're eliminated, then you won't be eliminated because eternity is a whole bunch of time.

The song before this on the 'Gorillaz' LP is Tomorrow Comes Today.
This one is about God.
ring the bell when that flips some switches

and the New Genious is you. Your worthless ass who reads these things about enlightenment as if you were something special. That's until you realize that if enlightenment comes to unworthy slackers like yourself 'New Genious', then must all be worthless! and note "Genious" is a misspelling.

Warpaint – Billie Holiday Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is absolutely heartbreaking. The section from Martha & the Vandellis is easy; a song about being faithful. How sweet. Then the band turn the whole thing around with the phrase, "If she wants to go". She's leaving despite all this talk of faithfulness.
The 'birds of a feather' portion is the finale and can interpreted a handful of ways; 1) the girl is singing to her new man, 2) the man left behind is singing of the girl so either a) she's leaving him the way she found him or b) he wasn't faithful either. The fact that there is a decrescendo before repeating 'birds of a feather' leads me think its either 1 or 2b.
However, I think it strange to interact with an entirely new character at the very end of a piece. This could be just reinforcing the idea that this is the last thing you see of this girl, her with her new guy. Or as in 2b, the guy was never faithful either, making you reconsider why this girl had decided to leave in the first place. Maybe she was faithful, she meant what she said. Then she found out about him cheating and went to find someone to treat her better. In that case all three endings work, actually.

Caleb spent years writing about relationships. Only By the Night was no different. The whole record tells a story about overcoming a bad relationship. This song is the transitional key that sets up both the religious and political overtones for the remainder of the album.

Kings of Leon – Camaro Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is a narrative with two characters, the narrator and a girl. Fans who follow closely the Southern lyrical themes in Caleb's writing will note his choice of words and the way his narrator interacts with the girl. When the narrator makes her 'look him in the eyes' you know something is up. She a fast living sonovagun and he knows how she gets sometimes when men are around.
The "she blow" part is a reference to blowing kisses. Later on it may hold double meaning as she and her Camaro are driving away from the narrator.
