| Feels like the most "Silence" out of all the stuff released this year. A lot of pain and fear come through in his voice on this one. | |

2nd stab... Crusades? Jumped at me all of a sudden. Crows scavenging a battlefield, soldier kissing the ground of his king and claims it for his Lord. Stations of a new cross! A reluctant soldier dealing with guilt of a war that he feels to be unjust as his faith has waned, but has pledged his life to serve yadayada? Stations of a new cross screams Crusades to me but it could be allegory for something more modern... And in that sense perhaps its told from the perspective of the defender? Kissing the ground makes sense there too especially at faintest (first/last) light. Hmmmmm... |

Cozen i think you are on to something. "Return what I've given out" Is that a plea or a demand? Song ends there quite abruptly. |

Agreed russell9001. It's been there overtly often enough but most of the time its not incredibly obvious, of course it was about interpretation back then too. Most of what i've heard on Green and Coloring Book is OVERTLY religious in its lyrics and tone IMHO. Also from the old lyrics of some of the reworked songs to the updated versions that got pressed, it seems the tone was the same. Most of Green (from what i understand) is some of the "older" stuff( GJ had been kicking around. |

Poop. After a quick check, it seems i was mixing Charon with Phlegyas... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phlegyas Although there is a crow involved in the Phlegyas tale, and it does "steal the dreams" from someone's eyes, so to speak, by snitching to Apollo of an affair. I think its reaching quite a bit. Couldn't find any references to a crow/raven and a ferryman of the dead :( Alas. Anyone Else? |

First few lines referring to the ferryman of Styx? In Greece it was a custom to leave coins over the eyes of the dead so Charon would take the souls of the dead to the afterlife, but if you couldn't pay, you were left in a kind of purgatory to wander for eternity. Here's where my memory gets fuzzy tho; i remember a bird being involved. A crow or raven perhaps? I thought the bird either collected the coins for Charon or it would steal them preventing the soul from entering the afterlife? Crows and ravens were regarded as a bad omen or even a symbol of death itself in literature and ancient mythology. "Nevermore" and such... Of course i could just be remembering wrong. If i were right it could provide context to the lyrics.... *fingers crossed* |

| Glassjaw – Miracles In Inches Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Unshakeable faith is unshakeable or God has a plan/is communicating and soforth. Basically it seems to me like its someone on the outside watching others looking and desperately wanting to find meaning where there is none, so they fabricate their own meaning. I get that the most from the line: "And AGAIN you'll find A miracle in inches I KNOW you will" Its even in the delivery of the verse, to my ear. "It never fails, yet again you desperately want to find meaning where there is none, and so you have" Example1: Girl cries blood. Its a sign from god to devout worshipers, but to someone less faithful its a medical condition. Example2: Man gets bonked on the head by whatever, goes to the hospital and has a MRI or something, docs find a tumor that would have otherwise gone unnoticed had said head not gotten bonked. Miracle or Coincidence? or maybe its something as unassuming as a peice of toast that has a burnt section that could be interpreted as being in the shape of a man with a beard. It could also be more general. It dosen't seem like a knock to acknowledging a higher power exactly, but more like, "why wouldn't you question the things happening around you rather than just accepting what you're 'fed' or what is 'the norm'" "So the world ISN'T flat?! The Earth is NOT the center of the universe?! And we are but passengers on a small rock in a mind bogglingly huge and old universe containing uncountable heavenly bodies?! Blasphemy!!!" (reaching here but it serves the point) Dunno. Thats just what i get from "Miracle in Inches" at this late hour. -great song tho. Darly sounds as good as ever. Maybe better? |

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" ("Abandon all hope, ye who enter here") Sounds and "feels" very tense and deperate to me. Like there is a heavy air of despair. Especially in the "no one gets out alive" hook and from the 2:20 mark to 2:50. *shivers* |

Dunno what it means but it "feels" very tribal in its latin beat. I think of El Dorado when i hear this song. Thats my gold reference. p.s. The hook at 45 seconds gives me goosepimples. |
