Hurt – Just A Thought Lyrics 14 years ago
I first heard this song, after listening to Hurt since the Vol. I days, right after my fiance of almost 4 years left me. The song fits the situation and the reasons behind the split so well, we'd broken up before and gotten back together shortly after, swore I would never let it happen again, and while a lot of things changed not enough had for her to stay with me. It's nice to have a song about a relationship ending that doesn't revolve around cheating or abuse or the anger associated with the maelstrom of feeling because we both loved each other when it ended...and I know if she's reading this right now that I still love her with all my heart, and I'll never give up and shut the door on her <3

Insomnium – The Harrowing Years Lyrics 14 years ago
Nihilistic and cynical...self explanatory to the title, we toil the years of life away for what purpose? We beg for our release in hopes of something better, but hardened by the rigors of life we know the stories of a peaceful afterlife are a lie, note the change from "learnt" to "heard".

Insomnium – In the Halls of Awaiting Lyrics 14 years ago
Postmortem letter to a lover, written by the deceased, who is waiting for his/her lover to join them in death. Despite being in the divine land, a paradise if you will, loneliness and the thought of being forgotten in death bears a heavy burden. It isn't until the last stance, with the death of their love, that they are reunited. All in all, a very beautiful song with a very unique point of view.

RA – Supernova Lyrics 14 years ago
A celestial metaphor for a rebirth of some kind. The sun lives it's life, "dies" in a violent outburst of energy, and becomes something new. The song seems to focus on the lead up to the very moment before this rebirth: setting your body free from expectations, the confines and limitations you place on yourself, and discovering the endless possibilities that await you. The spoken part is particularly powerful, metaphorically commenting on our passive aggressive nature and the cost of that nature. The envy, expectation, and regret that we surround ourselves with, and our need to set ourselves free of it.

Hurt – That (such a thing) Lyrics 14 years ago
pure, unfiltered emotion, and the places it takes you. How could you ever explain such a thing?

Eluveitie – (Do)minion Lyrics 14 years ago
Diviciacus was brother to Dumnorix, both were powerful and influential persons of the Aedui in the first century BC. Diviciacus aligned himself with Rome, while Dumnorix was greatly opposed to even so much as diplomatic relations. The lyrics form a sort of letter to his brother, and reflect upon a possible inner conflict where Diviciacus believes he essentially sold out and betrayed his heritage, but did so to save himself and his countrymen, as the song says "lose your soul or lose your life." The spoils of being a "slave" to Rome only sweetened the pot. At the same time the song also reflects upon his distaste of Dumnorix's actions, who sought to migrate with his followers from Gaul to escape Roman control around 58 BC.

Suidakra – The IXth Legion Lyrics 14 years ago
As the title implies, the ninth roman legion was a veteran legion that served across the roman empire between 65 BC and approximately 117 AD. Formed in Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula), they served under Ceasar during the conquest in Gaul, and also in the invasion and occupation of Britian.

The song deals with their mysterious disappearance around 117 AD. The popular belief is that they disbanded in Britain, some believe they were destroyed in the Bar Kochba Revolt in the middle east, but the most fitting theory for the song is that they disbanded or were destoryed by some means in the Netherlands, going on the basis of "Nordic tunes fill the air". While not quite as Nordic as say Sweden or Norway, it certainly fits the song in a better way then Britain given the time period.

The song itself tells the story of the Ninth from their opponents side, with the end result being an ultimate defeat. The guardians of the land, whether supernatural or simply generations of battle hardened warriors, destroy the legion leaving no-one to tell their tale, other then the standing stones who bore witness to their demise.

Eluveitie – Quoth The Raven Lyrics 14 years ago
A song very much about death, from the third person view. This song may very well be a reference to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", given the song title. It may also be in reference to the very long history ravens, or rather corvids in general, hold in mythology as messengers, guides, and even death itself. Being that in most European mythology the raven and death share a close relationship, I tend to believe the latter is the majority influence. As to the particular origin, as widely seen as the raven is in old texts, only the artists know.
