Quoth The Raven Lyrics

I am the mystery
And I am the bringer of the moonless night
I bear the wisdom arcane
I, harbinger from the burrowed isle

Once you break forth
Harken the flap of my wings

I haunt your fears
Though you don't know of my duty
To lead your path
Because I'll take you home to rest
In my black wings enfolding you

I am the icon sublime
The guide of the voyage clandestine
I sing the verses bewailed
I, torch of the radiant way

Once you step out
Hearken the strokes of my wings
Once you will leave your cocoon
I will be there

And death will smile his barefaced smile
Initiating your final anguish
It is not before my arrival
that you will be led to feel
the natural serenity of leaving this world...
Hear my wings caressing the wind!
Hear my cry!

I haunt your fear
Though you don't know my duty
To lead your path
Because I'll take you home to rest
In my black wings, enfolding you

A song very much about death, from the third person view. This song may very well be a reference to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", given the song title. It may also be in reference to the very long history ravens, or rather corvids in general, hold in mythology as messengers, guides, and even death itself. Being that in most European mythology the raven and death share a close relationship, I tend to believe the latter is the majority influence. As to the particular origin, as widely seen as the raven is in old texts, only the artists know.

Yeh, on seeing the title I assumed it was an Edgar Allen Poe reference, but I think you're right it is mainly harking back to the mythological association between ravens and death. If anything, Poe is in fact alluding to the same thing in his poem.

Oh, and p.s.: what a totally awesome song!

I really like the song. I am just fascinated by the music, it is so strong in feelings! I believe it has to do with someone who died in a battle and the spirit of raven or something is trying to help his scared soul leave this world as peacefully as possible
