I always thought it was some weird cannibalistic musings, because I thought the lyrics were as follows; There's a baby With an itchy head Pour butter on it I'll take a knife so I can Take a bite pour butter on I'm 65 Nobody in my family knows I'm alive Hey little girl I would've(wanna?) cut your hair off Hey little girl So I can Pour butter on it So I can take bite And I will(would?) I'm 99 And I'm in jail I wish I could have a million kids A million girls I would cut their hair off And I would Pour butter on them So I can take bite With that(my?) knife I could pour Butter on them One, two, three, four |

| Cat Power – Shaking Paper Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I always figured that shaking paper referred to omamori, the japanese paper charms that people would hang for protection from demons or other evils. And I figured she was calling the person that verse is directed to a demon by saying they were also scared of the sound of shaking paper. | |
| Cat Power – What Would the Community Think? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Although this may or may not be unrelated, sometime around the making of this album Chan got an abortion (the subject of Nude as the News). So, I always assumed that was what, at least partially, this song was about. Also possibly about premarital sex/relationships in general. | |
| Cat Power – Water and Air Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I think the beginning is right after some sort of drowning accident. She's being dragged out of the river, she describes the man who helped her as nice... but her lover's been taken away. The rest of the song is more recent events, events that cause her to become more more deeply depressed and manic. I think the last stanza, the parallelism is referring to her own desire to be at the bottom of the river. Suicide. |

| Cat Power – We All Die Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I think these are correct. But the sounds are ambiguous, as is Chan's style. Here you go Saying that she's out Here you go Marriage and kids and Drug Addiction All the lies aside I believe I am the Luckiest person alive Hell we all die Sometimes Hell we all try Somewhere Money always sees Money always draws The line(s?) Hope you can see Through the beggers And the pleaders Do you happen to know Where I am from? I'm lost in this Sore Earth from home Far from home Do you happen to know Where I am from? I'm lost Far from mom All the lies aside I believe I am the Luckiest person alive Hell we all die Sometimes Hell we all try Somewhere X4 (this next part goes too fast for me to get) Stand on my feet So I can see yours Standing on my hands I found my way home Standing on my head |

I'm almost positive these are the correct lyrics. Out of tune It's no idea Cannot croon But I can squeal Sticking to Frozen wheel Touching you Magnetic field Take the loot Bruise the fruit Forget what to say Call your bluff Get away Clear the room Watch them reeling Sex is soon But first the feeling Out of tune It's so ideal Clear the room And watch them reel Take the loot Bruise the fruit Forget what to say Call your bluff Get away |

| Cat Power – Red Apples (Smog cover) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
So here's my two bits on this beautiful song. I think the red apple is supposed to be like temptation. She is going to meet this widowed woman at the river to comfort her, and the widow gives her and apple as a symbol of temptation. So they're having a relationship. I don't know what the black arms mean. I think she is sleeping in her arms while they are together, but maybe the singer doesn't feel like she loves this person. Maybe the widow just needed comfort, needed someone to love. And the singer was there to provide but didn't reciprocate. I don't know what the simile of the husband as a horse means, other than to lead into the cart imagery. I think the millions of red apples is a symbol of the husband either moving on and being okay with the widow's new relationship, or is mocking the singer who is now in a relationship she has no feelings for. I know this is a cover song, and I believe the original singer was a male. I think the fact that Chan is female adds another layer of "sin" to this song, which is ultimately what I think it's about. A woman losing her husband, loving another woman after his death, and being haunted by her husband for it. |
