Definitely my favorite song on the album. I like where this band is going, I honestly do, but I just wish more songs were like this (with a somewhat distinctive melody) than the pure synth-psychadelic noise and Andrew's muffled vocals hidden in the background. I'd like to hear more of him, the straining high voice and the rusty low notes. It's sexy. To me, this song is simple: He doesn't care girlfriends right now. He thinks of them as always being there. He wants to be free, but it seems that someone stops him once he is. And when he's free, he wants to tend to what's missing and try not to fill it with a girlfriend. This song is actually very deep and rings very true. The bartender admits to Andrew that even the best girlfriends weren't really his best. So what's the point to have one right now, when there are so many always around! |

I picked up on "children walking hand in hand with pygmies in zee park." There's a band called Chrome from the mid-70's that were experimental' post-punk, psychadelic rock (which MGMT is trying to recreate) that has a song called "Pigmies in Zee Park" off their album "Alien Soundtracks" Interesting. |

This song might be about a girl, or potential lover, actually. The writer (either Andrew or Ben) is being nostalgic about memories he has with another person. "I can still hear the reflections in the air Feeding time Either hemisphere if it's summer there Seeking you, taking a dive, Streets realigned Ooh ooh ooh Stored in my mind" This part is about walking through a neighborhood. He is remembering hearing 'reflections in the air' during summer when he'd walk somewhere and find where the other person was swimming. He knows those streets and that neighborhood well though and is envisioning them in his mind, as they are stored there forever. "All I could do not to steal All the fun in the world From your little heart And now I owe it back to you" The writer is saying that he tried all he could do to not 'steal all the fun in the world' from this person's heart, but by leaving them or breaking up, he did. And now he feels he owes it back to them. "But it's hard to catch it and let it go, Find excuses to burn right through the grief And to melt, to melt, to melt Oh my poor memories" He feels like it's hard to get rid of someone's heart when you've already caught it. You don't want to let that person go. He finds excuses about the relationship to get over being sad about it. He's burning his memories. This is my favorite Sufjan song. But the lyrics seem so shallow for something he'd usually write. I understand it's about a one-night-stand type of deal. The girl obviously loves him but he just wanted pleasure. But at the same time, he feels bad for her and how he made her feel. He didn't mean to lead her on. |
