Lowlife – Coward's Way Lyrics 1 year ago
Arguably one of the most intelligently arranged and poignant vocal lines ever put to tape - and, inarguably, one of the most underrated. The idea of making the vocal lines run into and over each in the latter half of the song is a brilliant sonic representation of the chaotic thoughts in an anxiety disorder ridden mind.

Lowlife – Ramified Lyrics 1 year ago
Given that the lyrics mention mathematical operations - and even though I'm not sure Craig was a mathematician - it seems quite a coincidence that "ramification"/"tamely ramified" is a term in higher mathematics.

OSI – Home Was Good Lyrics 9 years ago
@[lordjmiv:9890] That was my first thought as well - the 95% 'happen at home' line talks about some incidents of which 95% happen at home. That 95% of accidental deaths happen at home might be an overstatement, but the lyrics do seem to be getting to some place in that vicinity.

According to a comment on the Youtube video by the actress in the video, this song is "a parent singing a love song to their child".

Slowdive – Rutti Lyrics 9 years ago
These lyrics are posted on most lyrics sites and while I find the rest of the lyrics fairly OK, there's no way he's saying 'ghost' there. Ends with a definite 'th' sound. Sounds more like 'both' to me.

Slowdive – Machine Gun Lyrics 9 years ago
@[161803:8493] This is an attractive interpretation - possibly what Neil or Rachel had in mind - but there are a few inaccuracies here. I'm from India and have a fair idea about the mythological context surrounding Gauri/Parvati/Sati and Shiva. Gauri does not mean 'yellow-hued', it means 'white-hued'. Additionally, the immersion of Ganesha idols does not have any mythological relevance. It is merely a way of returning the idols - which were traditionally made of clay or mud sourced from banks of water bodies - back to where they came form.

King Crimson – Neurotica Lyrics 10 years ago
Sounds to me to be somewhat influenced by the Beat generation writers. There's also the apparent reference to Howl by Ginsberg, for good measure.

Cocteau Twins – Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires Lyrics 11 years ago
Agreed totally. The thoughts of the subconscious mind make their way into the lyrics even if the lyrics haven't been written to mean anything specific.

"I would play this song whenever a relationship didn't work out" - looks like I'm not the only one to do that :'-)

Actually that is a quote that Steinem herself referred to having taken from Irina Dunn.

Incredibly beautiful. As close to a Cocteau Twins featuring Peter Steele as it gets - a combo I always wished to hear.

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. Lyrics 12 years ago
To be honest, I can't disagree with those who just heard the catchy chorus and misconstrued the meaning. English isn't my first language either; I first heard it when I was 7, only understanding the chorus, definitely felt the chorus had a very patriotic vibe. When I actually got the lyrics to this song in my teens was when I realized what this song was actually about.

But yes, the fact that Ronald Reagan's plans regarding this song were very surprising. At any rate, I haven't too many songs with lyrics this moving and a chorus so ironic.

Type O Negative – Red Water (Christmas Mourning) Lyrics 13 years ago
Christmas is almost here and I can't listen to this song without my eyes welling up. By far the most depressing Christmas song ever. Depressing yet absolutely beautiful.

Cannibal Corpse – Addicted To Vaginal Skin Lyrics 13 years ago
It's interesting how CC have foregone the themes of extreme sexual perversion (which seem to piss people off the most) since Gore Obsessed. Funnily, GO didn't even have an f-word. Since GO, the only songs about sexual perversion are Worm Infested, Necrosadistic Warning and, to a lesser extent, Followed Home Then Killed, the last one from Torture. Eliminate these, and what you have left is nothing worse than run-of-the-mill slasher films, most of which receive nowhere near as much criticism as CC.

Elizabeth Fraser actually talks about what the lyrics to this particular song mean in this interview:

Cocteau Twins – Theft, and Wandering Around Lost Lyrics 13 years ago
The lyrics seem to be reflective of a sexual encounter on the face of it, and the thoughts of the woman afterwards. Then again, I could be completely off (as we know, lyrics are seldom as straightforward as they look) or the lyrics could even be totally meaningless.

Sunn O))) – Sin Nanna Lyrics 13 years ago
Apparently, the song's name is derived from the name of the Mesopotamian god of the moon, Sin, who Sumerians referred to as 'Nanna'.

Deep Blue Something – Halo Lyrics 13 years ago
The first 2 verses are bizarre and I've tried fruitlessly to think of a possible interpretation. They seem totally disjointed when compared to the rest of the lyrics, which are relatively straightforward.

Isis – 1000 Shards Lyrics 13 years ago
If I take aranneas' comment seriously, this song might be referring to Aaron Turner's following statement:

"Through explaining the last two albums time and time again, I just started to become weary of the topic, and I started to feel like I was losing my connection to the music and the lyrics simply from having repeated it so many times." (From Wikipedia)

'Gathered scribes over, jagged shards under foot' may be a reference to how scribes (journalists, interviewers) repeatedly ask him about his lyrics and how it's uncomfortable for him like some jagged shards under his foot.

In the same vein,

"Into the truth
Let myself burn
Now it's written
1000 shards "

might refer to how his inclination against repeatedly explaining his lyrics is the truth for him.

Just absolute arrows in darkness these ideas. I could probably come up with an explanation which is just as convincing to myself, with a totally different meaning ;)

Dream Theater – Wait for Sleep Lyrics 13 years ago
In an interview to a Korean Radio channel (interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGE2Jf71M4o) Kevin Moore mentions that this song is actually about a girl who's lost her sister. He also provides a nice explanation of the album cover in the same interview.

U2 – Love Comes Tumbling Lyrics 14 years ago
Quite possibly my favorite U2 song too. If not then definitely in my top 5. Not least because of Adam's incredible bass playing and the fact that I'm a bassist too.

I'm quite sure the lyrics to this song have a strong 'stream of consciousness' thing going on. There's a video on YT of Bono singing gibberish to the music of this track which tells me that the lyrics were made to fit the music. That's not to say the lyrics don't have meaning. IMO, it's the description of someone who's not in love with his 'bride' after marrying her. Not sure if it's because he used to love her and doesn't anymore or that he loved someone else and didn't love his 'bride' in the first place ('virgin bride' would suggest the latter).

Peter was an exceptional lyricist. This song is a prime example of his brilliance in this regard. This song's lyrics rank as my favorite along with Joni Mitchell's Song For Sharon ;)

Type O Negative – IYDKMIGTHTKY (Gimme That) Lyrics 14 years ago
I subscribe to that idea: a mentally unstable person killing a girl. Also, there seems to be an idea of treating the mentally unstable person as an object and not a human, thus the pronoun 'it' and not 'he'. Insanity seems to be a theme in at least one other Type O Negative song: Who Will Save The Sane off World Coming Down.

I can relate 100% with the wet eyes thing. I still don't listen to the songs on this album (esp. this one and Song For Sharon) on my music player in a public place for fear of embarrassment- I'm totally serious.
