Frank Turner – Journey of the Magi Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with Mwasa245 this song is so gorgeous. I've listened to it so many times and it's beautiful every time. I always wonder where the idea came for it though, it's so different to Franks other songs. The key its in helps to lure the sort of ancient feel of what he's talking about, Moses and ancient Egypt and other figures of ancient history. The haunting rise in the music fits so well with the stories. The whole song just carries the raw ancient essence of such old periods in history as those.
Any ideas on where the idea came from would be good..

Crowded House – Even A Child Lyrics 15 years ago
First one to comment? Ok then..
When I hear this song I always think Neil is reflecting on his children growing up and going out into the world, but he wants to remember when they were young and dependent and not to be cynical about the world. There are some parts that don't fit as well with that analogy but I think it's aimed at his sons. Liam is also a musician and the lines
"you are free now to go wherever you want/
when you sing about love, what are you thinking of?/nothing like waking up in some foreign town/music the call to prayer/wailing out of speakers in the market place/the first time" are about Liam travelling the world playing music. I quite like to think of this song in that way but would love to know others' opinions

Bell X1 – My First Born For A Song Lyrics 15 years ago
Noonan is a genious song writer anyway. So many funny little bits in his songs, some literature references but I love "climb into the attic to write me a classic/but its not happening, its just christmas up here".
Another eg. is in "Next to you" "a little all over the shop/like those holy souvenirs from Knock/that come all the way from China"..brilliant.

Bell X1 – Reacharound Lyrics 15 years ago
Paul Noonan is such an intelligent song writer. He throws in little bits of humour or literature references and this song is no different

"The wink and elbow language of delight" is taken from a poem by Patrick Kavannagh, an Irish poet.

Crowded House – Fingers Of Love Lyrics 15 years ago
Chills. Every time. I've grown up with Crowded House and I think there's something to be said when you cannot get sick of a band or their songs after 15+ years? Also that this song can give me chills when I've heard it absolutely hundreds of times. Neil Finn has an incredible song writing ability...Love them

Mumford & Sons – White Blank Page Lyrics 15 years ago
If you listen to the whole Mumf&Sons album you can hear that it's riddled with religious connotations. I had the album for months before I learnt that the singers folks are the head honchos of the "Vineyard Church" in the whole of UK. Listening again all the religious stuff is really obvious. This song particularly speaks so well about the conflicts young Christians have with serious relationships and not giving into their temptations "Can you lie next to her/and give her your body/ and can you kneel before the king and say I'm clean"
Also the lines "Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with all my heart" must definitely be about faith and God.
The whole album is really well written and the singer has a great knack of not getting things too obviously religious

Crowded House – A Sigh Lyrics 15 years ago
I just listened to this song, its usaully one off the album I prefer to skip but not this time. The haunting rise just speaks of such loss and emotion. I've always connected it to the suicide of their old drummer, Paul Hester. The Time on Earth album is dedicated to him and I felt many of the songs are to do with him. Hester battled with depression and I think the lines "A sigh for loneliness to end/ this show is not fooling anyone" is completely about what he went through.
