Definitely agree with bandislife. Also, did anyone else think of Kate Bush's song Running up that Hill? I've been trying to draw some parallels between the songs, because the metaphors used are similar. Really, compared to this, relationship problems seem like just a bump in the road to her. :P |

| Splashdown – Dig Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Well... she seems a bit shallow to me. She jumps with this idea in her head that she is complicated, bottomless, but she still ends up back on the ground. (Even refuses to admit her mistake! "high above is the place from which I'd like to think I FELL") Then instead of saying, "Hey, maybe I'm not as deep as I thought, I should get out of here" she keeps digging because she desperately hopes to uncover another layer of herself. Even worse, she waits for some divine power to come save her instead of attempting to get out on her own. Reasons not to become super self-absorbed (because I have been there). |

| The New Pornographers – These Are the Fables Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Okay, this is probably a really odd interpretation, but I think it's about a mother that has had a miscarriage or stillbirth? The setting itself is ocean-like and the ocean is often used as a metaphor for sex. Cities in circles could be the ovaries, the ten thousand dancing girls the eggs. The "wind back to the river" could be the actual birth, as well as the hammer coming down on the evening. But you get towards the end of the song and there's this: Heaven shook hell And down from its pockets The ring in your bell It fell through your hands So I'm thinking the baby didn't make it? The final lines "lay down in glory, you're not alone" would support that too. I don't know, does anyone else have any ideas? |

| The New Pornographers – The Bones of an Idol Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I think it's about the effect religion has on people. On one hand, there are the people who are happy with the "bones of an idol", which I see as primarily a good foundation to build your life around. And then their are people who want power and glory... the cup, belt and title. And judging by the last part of the song, I'd say it's more specifically about how the people who are just in it for themselves end up screwing it up for everyone else. |

| Turin Brakes – Feeling Oblivion Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Damn those lucky kids that just got out of school and have a whole worry-free summer ahead of them. Definitely an "ignorance is bliss" sort of viewpoint, but I think it's more about having someone else there to take the wheel while you cope though. | |
| Oh No Ono – Internet Warrior Lyrics | 14 years ago |

"I freeze up far too often, enough is enough for me. I made a quick decision to calm down and left their open mouths without a sound." Makes me think of someone who's painfully shy or an agoraphobic who feels so completely overwhelmed that they become reclusive. They are torn between an inexplicable fear "sometimes I'm fed up with faces" and the need to interact normally with others "sometimes I stare". The dream readers (psychologists?) and others that are trying to help, only make things worse with their unrealistic optimism. In addition, this person has gotten so used to the isolation that it becomes normal, comfortable even. |

| Metric – Satellite Mind Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I get the internet as satellite mind interpretation. It makes me think of social networks like Facebook, especially lines like "let me tell you my last thought" and the chorus, "when I'm bored, I send vibrations in your direction from the satellite mind". If you don't connect all that well with others in person, social networks can create that feeling from the comfort of your own room. "I can feel you most when I'm alone" Maybe it's a stretch, I'm not sure how it would apply to some of the other lyrics, but I thought it was interesting. :) |

| Universal Hall Pass – Cave Radio Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I stumbled across this on Wikipedia in an article on Hermeticism: The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus is a short work which coins the well known term in occult circles "As above, so below." Apparently, this tablet had a lot to do with alchemy, transmutations, etc. Melissa Kaplan must really be fascinated with religion/philosophy, so many of her songs seem like they're geared towards those topics. |

| The Bird and the Bee – I Hate Camera Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I get something along the same lines as Makashiro. I imagine the politician, only in it for the money and power, who sets up a photo shoot (of the baby-kissing type) only to improve his image. Or the doctor who has similar motives and doesn't actually care about helping people. Only, no one likes being told to "sit down and shut up" while their misfortunes are used for someone else's self-serving agenda. Maybe she's speaking out against this? | |
| Metric – Parkdale Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
A slightly more optimistic interpretation Maybe... it's about someone looking back on parts of their life (or that's what I get from "why am I hovering over myself?" and "when we started walking, I was in the 1940's). In their maturity, they've learned that every person, every place and new experience is an opportunity so that they can later "rewind and play back beautiful music". |

| Splashdown – Asia At Odd Hours Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Every time she gets to "I've been waiting for you!", all I can imagine is how in cartoons when two characters are racing and one catches up to the other who's been reading a book or sleeping, etc. This amuses me greatly. :/ I think it's kind of like truth taunting those who search for it. No idea about the rest of the references to lotus flowers and Mao, etc... |
