The Maccabees – O.A.V.I.P. Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so beautiful.

"She collects medicines in the box where once he had kept his."
"The slow depart happening again."

I think this could easily be about dealing with divorce or loss of a loved one. I like loss of a loved one more because then the lyrics gain more power and poignancy. Not that they need it. This song makes me wish I was Orlando Weeks.

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 15 years ago
"Lay me down in a hearseback... minor veins are mapped." We know Yoni is content to die, and if along the way he has committed some sins, he will not feel regretful.

"These tits... black and yearning." He wants to be someone different, and though the desire is strong, it doesn't burn him up, just leaves him "black and yearning."

"Will the new year... magazines for tables." <-- this verse confuses me the most. I'm guessing it's about repaying debts and getting older and feeling bitter.

"A girl's down bed and corresponding naked wings unable." Even desire/lust with someone who is pure can't fix him or make him feel better or happier.

"When I felt my ribs...survived." This bit reminds me of the way a really hard cry racks your ribcage. And how your body betrays your feeling and your health betrays you also. The heart (and lungs) is in the ribcage, so perhaps the snakes are meant to be strangling not just his breathing (which makes sense with the lungs), but the heart as well. But I really do think it's about a really heavy cry and the way that sometimes after you finish lamenting about such burdensome things, you can't believe you're still alive.

"But you might find me... left listed in the book of numbers." The white pages are a reference to the Yellowpages, no doubt but The Book of Numbers is the fourth of the five books in the Jewish Torah. The first part of the Book of Numbers is the numbering of who was at Sinai, and their plans to start marching again. So I think it's a pretty obvious religious allusion to that, as are the new year and Maccabee references.

I love this song, the intro music sounds so happy and then you contemplate the lyrics and feel a little heartbroken.

Why? – Gnashville Lyrics 15 years ago
i really like this idea. there is so much "know god" literature in religion, but one of the biggest paradoxes of religion is that you can never truly know god. you'll never even see his hands or talk to him or anything.

The José Gonzalez version of this is also incredible. I love them both equally, but my mood needs to be different for them.

i think it's "you everything anything little and big"

and is it "buried barns" or "buried burns"?

and there's a "1! 2! 3! 4!" before the last stanza

i love this song.

Julie Doiron – The Life of Dreams Lyrics 15 years ago
"And my loves, are well, sleeping just right and I know know know now that we're...
Living the life of dreams, living the life of dreams"

Maybe I'm crazy, but doesn't the fact that she says "loves" and "we're" imply she's in love/a lover of more than one person? I find this to be awesome.

"I met you right, but I kept you wrong"

Such a good line, and the feeling is easy to relate to.
