im not sure whats happening, it could be that the dear hunter kills his father, though if he is i dont think the mood of the song fits so im not sure. thought "i kept this for a reason" could be him having kept the stuff he bought from the poison lady to poison his dad. it kinda feels like its from someone elses perspective but if it is i have no idea whos. because its "THE mother" and "THE father" not 'my' and "everything WE'VE ever wanted is here for US" thouhgh the "i kept it for a reason bit" could be from the dear hunters perspective in the background. the last line, as in "you look like him" being the son. is whoever it is singing saying that he resembles the boy that hi mother knew but he has greatly changed. matured, grown, loved, lost, probably injured in the war. =) |

i think thi song is just the dear hunter just after having his father talk about doin his mother in such a dergetory manor. the first two sections are about that realy. then he begins to reflect on how life is a bit shit for him and all the soldiers. dreaming of a place where life is beautiful. the last bit is him perhaps wishing to forget about all the things that have happened to him, refering to them as "Forget the words to the songs that we've heard The passages read all the names in a world" this also reflects what he says in "red hands" that "maby this is just a work of art, scripted players in a play of lust" that he sees his life as a performance (which ironicaly it is =P) |

i think this is the dear hunter and his army buddies at the apothecarry somewhere trying to find something to get high off of to forget about the war, it was maby cheaper or stronger than booze at the time or something. the apothecary is sly and deceteful in her selling of her drugs, this seems to parallel with how people were signed up to the army "she swears shes offering you something savory" like the war enlisters promising glory an that. also the lines "a million men have reached and end a side effect of incompetence" she is talking about how many people have OD'd on drugs and died through incompetence, it also parallels with the millions of people who have died in wars because they have been tricked into joining or something and were to incompetent to see through the offer of glory. perhapse the apothecary herself is hinting in a desceptive way that they are the victims of the reruting techniques. |

im thinking him and his batalion are being attacked by a tank and as he is so close to death his thoughts stray to his past life and his love with miss leading, and he begins to make a parallel between the tank and either p+p or miss leadings life as a prozie. "So long ago...was I one of them?" this line showing how long ago his heart break with miss leading was and it aswell as his old life seem so distant and uncertain in the face of the imediate threat but they are still there in the back of his mind. |

i agree that hes joined the army and hes seeing what it was like and how its all hideous acts an all that. its all from his perspective or the perspective of his fellow soldiers accept from the line "We've never been so excited to see you before." which is clearly the leaders or recruters who are willing to take advantage of anyone with their propaganda just to get them to fight for their cause. the last softer section i like to think is himm sitting in some underground bunker all muddied in his uniform between fights with a vinal player playing the song and him sitting smiling thinking of miss leading. the whole thing is supposedly going to be a film or a musical and i find picturing it as such helps me decifer the lyrics |

im thinking that this is the dear hunter leaving on a boat and heading out to a new life, or the war which i think is what the next album is about. hes saying goodbye to the memories and pain of the death of this mother and his love for miss leading. whatever it is its definately him leaving on a boat. "Salt in the sky in the sweet summer air while mammoths depart" obviously the salt of the sea. and maby the mamoths departing are large boats departing from the docks as he approaches. "Goodbye, my eyes shed heavy tears" him saying goodbye "Ebb to the left flow to the right The exit's unflawed The boys on the train" more references to boats, the ebb and flow of the sea being his exit from his pain. and the boys on the train refers to "the oracles on the delphi express" where the "oracles" which i think of as a gang on the train say "If you flee from grace your souls can not be saved Big steam ships, exits illustrate the flaw" and he is reflecting on them saying these things to him on the train as he approaches he boat. the last bit is just a reference to the story so far and the main theme "the flame is gone but the fire remains" with him as the fire. |

the first part is him hurting because miss leading keeps letting him down by eier standing him up and that he cant seem to function without her and he hates himself for it. then he phones her "Now if you were in bloom I�d pluck your petals clean Although it won't seem so I can promise you my egos running me" these are his actuall words. then he recalls shes the only one who didnt fold which is a reference to "the church and the dime" the chorus goes "let the all fold, let them all fold" i think refering to all the other characters giving into theris desires and lusts so she is the only one who didnt meaning maby he thinks she is just holding back her true feelings and refuses to indulge them. or maby she is the strongest character in the story from the dear hunters pt of view then he breaks down telling her everything of his love in an attept to make her do the same thing |

i think mrme1213 has it right, though i dont think that ther hunter knows his mother was a prostitute yet. "I have been evicted From a soul constricted By the flameless fire Can we all just go cold?" im thinking this begining bit is him feeling freed from his previous life a little, having now found 'love' in miss leading he has a new angle on life. the flameless fire is miss leading, the idea of a flame and a fire have been used to represent the dear hunter (the fire) and his father (the flame) in battesimo del fuoco. this could be the dear hunter seeing a familiar story in miss leading, her being the fire and maby she is flameless because she has sunk to such low acts being a prostitute or because she has no paternal figure or something. |

this is obiouvlsy just after the dear hunter has slept with mis leading and because the p+p is her pimp he is the Machiavellian dandelion, acting polite and that but it is clear he has a darker motive, maby he wants payment from the deat=r hunter or maby suspects he is the son of mis terri but isnt sure. i love the image of "he telescoped his hand". fantastic! =D |

well obviously the song is about the dear hunter meeting miss leading. im thinking miss leading is a prostitute at the dime, in the church and the dime its him realising that its also a brothel and he decides to put it to good use. "Her lips hid her tongue from the world" this line suggests that her lips (her appearence, being well lush) distracted people from what she had to say if you know what i mean. "Let her hips guide your desire" this also gives the same idea. the line mimicking the matriark means that there is a link between the mother and her as they are both prozies. he thinks he is falling in love but the language suggests that it is realy the fact that she is the first woman to show him affection mixed with lust that forms the basis of his love. "He's naive; blissfully ignorant and Trusting but now?" this line sort of sums this up the first stansa of the song is him first meeting miss leading, it then picks up the pace and this then becomes a song from the point of view of p+p or members of the dime. i like to imagine the whole dear hunter story as if it were a musical being sung in a setting, i find this gives me a hand decifering his lyrics and the points of view etc. (apparently there is talk of it becoming a musical actually) |

i think the oracles are maby a gang or group of rough kids on the train telling the dear hunter to join their gang and forget about his past "You aren't in the land of the river and the lake no more" hes no longer connected to his mother any more as shes dead and he has a chance of a new start, but he doesnt want to join their gang. the first verse sees to be being sung by the gang and the first two lines of the second verse is the dear hunters internal dialogue "Crimson hands, brandish words which masquerade If you flee from grace your souls can not be saved" the crimson hands ore the gang as they are clearly guilty of crimes an that, they are trying to persuade him to join their gang, brindishing words of masquerades. the name "the oracles of the delphic express" the gang are refered to as oracles maby because they are offering him a future of crime and a place in their gang. but there is also a hint of his future "Big steam ships, exits illustrate the flaw .. When the bombs go off you'll know right where you are" they are maby saying if he doesnt join this will be his future leavin on the ship to go to war which does hapen at the end of act II, predicting his future. |

the song is about the dear hunter in the aftermath of his mothers death, realising that she was keeping so many secrets from him that he refused to aknowledge while she was alive though he doesnt know what (its that she was a prozie) because he says "That in time I think I'll see just what's been weighing down on me" in "his hands matched his tongue" hsowing he knew somit was up but he didnt know what. "You'll believe what you're led to believe" shows he now knows something is defo up but hes still not sure. the lake is the dear hunter and the river his now dead mother. the name of thrack suggests his (the lake) inquiry into what she (the river) had kept a secret from him. "But the right hand hates the left and the sea's upset with the sky So we press on in spite of the spite Happiness is a knife when the worlds on its side and your minds on fire" the aggresive lyrics and singing suggests him having a bit of a break down over his mothers death, "right hand hates left" shows his inner turmoil. he decides to leave and get on a train "Trying to find the trouble with the trouble I've found Begging my god to make the wheels go round Eat so much but I never get full Earth opened up and swallowed us whole" this section clearly representing him sitting on the train and his total desolation and emptiness. though whatever the meaning, this is a brilliant song, possibly my fav on the album! =D |

through the albums ive deduced that the mother is the river and the son the lake. so the line "take me to the river" could be a customer asking the priest to take him to "the river" being the mother of the dear hunter. "Sing softly, sing me to the lake. Sing softly, bring me to the lake." could be something about the mother comforting her son. or perhaps the p+p suspects that she has had a child (which would mean she would loose alot of business which is why she runs in "city escape" when she finds out shes preggers in the first place) and its him trying to slyly find out if she has had a kid or not. perhaps =P |

im thinking that the mother tried to burn down the dime or something as a way to escape her life as a prostitute and this is why the p+p had her killed. in "his hands matched his tongue" theres the line about smoke in the air that he can see as the dear hunter walks home. this could lead on to him going to see what had happend at the brothell then discovering his mothers body. i think the lines up untill "Hey there, no one cry." are before he arrives and the rest is his reaction to her death. "Place these over her eyes." obviously him offering coins to put on her eyes. "Reserved; always playing the part of the boy left alone. He proceeds to the road beyond the home he learned to call his own." this is him making his way from the murder. and "one life for another" could be him gettin ragin and sayin he wants to kill the one responsible, like an eye for an eye. |
