I adore this song. For me, it's about the moment you see someone you used to care for deeply. Seeing them feels like being underwater; everything is disjointed and disconnected, almost surreal. He knows things have moved on (he is spoken for), but in that moment, he is drowning in memories of how it used to be between them. The saddest part for me is the bridge. It's so heartbreaking. He doesn't want to know how she managed to become happy again, feels that it's unfair, but also is keeping that memory of her smile close to his heart. i dunno. just wanted to share my ideas |

For me, this song is about coming back from war. I didn't know anything about the Japan allusion, other than the "Tokagawa smile", but I'd thought it was about a solider adjusting to not being in combat. "The rising sun" is warfare, being destructive and possibly in Iraq "When i was 17 I had wrists like steel" could be about enlisting in the army and feeling invincable, but then realizing your "obsolete" due to new technology. "You felt the coming wave, told me we'd all be brave, you said you wouldn't flinch, but in the years that past since i saw you last, you haven't moved an inch" This is my favorite line in the whole song. I think it refers to the difficulty in coming back and readjusting to society. It's about being someone in war, but once that's over, it's hard to move on, hence "you haven't moved an inch" I had no idea about the Japanese influence in this song. This is what it means to me :) |
