Belle & Sebastian – Blue Eyes of a Millionaire Lyrics 15 years ago
Thanks Oogster! I think you're right about the lyrics being "*Sun dips* underneath the capricorn". I edited the lyrics.

I'm not entirely positive that the word is "wendy" in the first verse, but it fits with the meaning of the word, as "wendy" is British slang for a week, feeble, ineffective and contemptible person.

It's not "The sea cries of loves of girls
The sea cries of boys"

It's "the secret lies and loves of girls
The secret lies of boys"

or it might actually be lives and not lies

Actually, "chapter" totally makes sense, as it goes along with the "love is like a novel" metaphor. So he's saying that the women he has loved in the past have a chapter in his life (or their relationship is a chapter in his life).

This verse is the most beautiful and romantic verse that I think Stuart has ever written:

ever will I love you
you were good to me

My eyes water up every time I hear him sing that.

Since the album title is "Belle and Sebastian Write About Love", I think this song is Stuart's love song to Isobel. They supposedly had a really bad breakup and eventually Isobel left the band in the middle of a tour, so everything ended on a sour note. And every time Stuart has written a breakup song in the past, like "I'm Waking Up to Us", fans always assume it's about his breakup with Isobel. But now it's around 10 years later and Stuart is writing that he's thankful for the love they once had. So with Read the Blessed Pages, he's written a tender love song instead of an angry breakup song. At least that's my take on it. This song is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes whenever I listen to it.

Yay, I just figured this part out: it's chapter

Ever will I love you
Now your chapter's over

I think "Now I'm in memory" is supposed to be "Now a pained memory" as in a painful memory has somehow become a cherished (and thus no longer painful) story.

This song seems to be referring to the relationship that Stuart had with Isobel Campbell in the mid or late 90's, and there's a theory that Isobel had an affair with Aidan Moffat from the band Arab Strap when Belle and Sebastian and Arab Strap were both playing gigs in London together. That's what the song The Boy With the Arab Strap is about. Although it could have been someone else that Stuart was dating who had an affair with Aidan, not necessarily Isobel.

But the lines

Love and pain and sorrow
Keep the band together

and

Making plastic records
Of our history

would suggest he's talking about Isobel.

Maybe this is obvious, but "Master I love from the ground above" refers to God.

I think Lawrence and Phil refer to Lawrence Hayward from the band Felt, and Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy. Both singers and their bands were big influences on Stuart Murdoch. However, although Phil Lynott passed away in 1986, I'm pretty sure that Lawrence Hayward is still alive. So the ghost reference makes sense for Phil but not Lawrence. Does anyone have a different take on that?

Also, Stuart is very religious and often puts Christian references in his songs, although this song has more references than most.

I think it's "trying not to be a fool" not "trying not to be foot"

I think the title refers to objects in a church used in Sunday mass, such as a crucifix, wafers, etc. Like they're simply thought of as "pretty" because people don't take them seriously or think much about them once they leave church after the mass. I'm actually not a Christian so maybe someone else could offer a better explanation. However, I know that Stuart is very religious and often uses Christian references in his songs, like "Somebody asked me what hell was like" and "Every person that you despised is forgiven", which I assume refers to the notion that God forgives.

But can anyone explain the verse with the whisky? I have no idea what that's about.

I think it's "emerge" rather than "image"

The world will see her poor image, (?)
A butterfly to empathy.

Like how a caterpillar emerges as a butterfly; don't know what he's saying before emerge though

I have no idea what a suicide girl is, but I'm assuming that NHS is the national health service.

I love this song and Sarah's voice is gorgeous! I like how she uses past/future references in it, like "when you were young and free", "try but I can't remember", "I'm living in the past, you're making history", "don't leave me behind stuck in a memory". My favorite line is "Watch and a world will form in the sand." Really cool line.

If anyone can help with the lyrics it would be much appreciated. I've listened to the song a gazillion times and I still have no idea what the words are in this verse:

Stage scope falling like a summer end
Trees strip wrap yourself in color brown
Some dead's underneath the capricorn
Bell rings summer need to feeling warm

Actually, I believe the Paperback Throne was a Glasgow band in the 90's, when the song was written.
