I know the song's about Paul's grandmother, but I can't help but think of it in the context of a relationship I had that never went anywhere. Every time I think of it and regret it, that line "walk away" comes to mind. |

This was Thursday's encore on 12/2/11 at the Bottom Lounge, their last concert in Chicago. It was a spiritual experience. I was hoping for "War All Time" as an encore, but I think closing with a new song made a bold statement about where the band has gone in 14 years. |

I think the song is about capitalism, working your ass off for nothing while seeing everything around you commercialized. Feels like kind of a follow-up to "For The Workforce, Drowning". |

This song contains several references to "The Silence of the Lambs." The most noticeable one is in the chorus, "On my way nails broke and fell into the wishing well." "Wishing Well" appears to be a reference to the well in which serial killer Buffalo Bill holds his victims captive. On the stone walls of the well there are bloody streaks and chipped finger nails from past victims who have tried to climb out.
"The paramedics fell into the wound," could refer to the way Hannibal Lector escapes from captivity. He uses the cloths and flesh of dead security guards to give himself the appearance of a mutilated guard. When he is in the ambulance, he removes the mask and kills the paramedics; thus, the paramedics have "fallen into the wound". The Use of the word "fallen" may also refer to the way Hannibal throws the body of a guard down an elevator shaft to mislead the police.
I know the song is about eh Juarez murders, but I think that the band may have thrown in those pop culture references as well. |

| Love Lost But Not Forgotten – Happy To Be Alive Lyrics

This reminds me of the years my sister spent struggling with OCD. It was hell for my entire family. She became gradually more obsessive until the girl I knew was gone. She would become almost manic and then collapse for days at a time. I was young when this happened, and it took me far to long to realize what was happening. I know now that I aggravated some of her symptoms, and I feel intense guilt about it.
Several lines from the song remind me of those times. |

I think the first line, and maybe the whole song, is a reference to Shawshank Redemption.
"Drag a chair across the floor. Scratch your name into the wood above my door. "
this refers to the scene when Brooks carves "Brooks was here" in the rafter and then hangs himself from it.
"You really gave it your all, but you're finished here. You are finished here!"
this could refer to the letter that Brooks sends to the prisoners he left behind. The letter says that he is "leaving" the home he has been sent to. |

I've always loved this song, and reading the lyrics makes me love it even more. I first listened to As the Sun Sets during a time when I was severely depressed, so I always associate this band with those emotions. How interesting that this song fit the situation perfectly, yet at the time I didn't even know the words. |
