The Birthday Massacre – Pins And Needles Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about a serial killer. Yes, it sounds like a romance song, but I really can't help but think the deeper meaning is a serial killer. Walk with me here.

"Eyes white, I keep out of sight
This city's just not pretty like it used to be"
The serial killer was never caught, but had to stop to keep from getting caught. But, the city they live in isn't as pretty now that the dredges of society - in their eyes, the ones they used to kill - are piled up because no one has killed them.

"It's always a nightmare, it's never a dream
The promise we make to kill the days between
They live in the heartbeat and sleep til the light is gone"

This is referring to the promise they made with themselves - to not get caught, to not kill anymore because they don't want to get caught. But, it's a nightmare trying to keep the urge to kill down.

"It's been so long
Feels like pins and needles in my heart
So long
I can feel it tearing me apart"

The desire to kill is almost like a "pins and needles" feeling, always there in the back of their mind, egging them on. But, it must be contained and the struggle is tearing them apart.

"To the bed the left unsaid
Crawl in from outside my window
Hands red and cold as the dead
A pity they're not pretty like they used to be"

This is the wish and the need to not get caught welling up inside and causing a nightmare - they imagine that they went out and killed someone, but were sloppy about it and came home covered in blood, it's not as pretty anymore because they're freaking out about the police instead of savoring it.

I absolutely adore TBM! And Chibi's vocals here were hauntingly amazing - they were the whole reason I couldn't see this song just being a love song, the vocals were a little too dark to be just a love song, and really - it's the Birthday Massacre! When are any of their songs "just" one thing? =D

The Birthday Massacre – Lovers End Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm in somewhat agreement with everyone that it's about an urban legend and murder, but I don't think it's a jealous girlfriend and her husband/boyfriend.

"Hands cover whispers of the lovers' fright
Fear-cloaked renditions of that autumn night
Digging up rumours of the kids in the park
What awful things happened in the dark? "

This is the kids in the park tell the legend, even going so far as to act parts out, probably to scare each other.

"Take, just one last dare
Pretend you don't care
Till twilight falls"

This is about the lovers - they probably aren't very affectionate during the day, perhaps they work/go to school in different places, but once at home they're very loving towards one another. This is a problem as one of them has a stalker that doesn't know they're taken.

"And I can't stop my tears
I've never been so scared"

This is about the murder, but it's the stalker murdering the lovers - the stalker is frightened that they'll be caught.

"In the cellar buried 6 feet deep
The lover's shaken from a dreamless sleep"

They lovers were asleep when the stalker came in, dragged them out of bed and into the cellar.

"Nails clawing splinters from the ceiling and floor
Shrieking like the witches"

This is about the two lovers screaming in terror and trying to claw away from the stalker as they're being dragged. The noise from them screaming is too great, so the stalker sews the guy's mouth shut - he probably has a deeper and louder scream. "til his stitches are sore" that's what that part is referencing.

"Calling for the other, searching for her lover" The girl gets away somehow, but won't leave without her lover, so she goes looking for him. "Secrets she discovers drain her face of color" The stalker killed her lover, and when she finds his corpse she goes pale and probably screams.

"1.. 2.. 3.. 4 Underneath the cellar floor
5.. 6..7..8 Lover will suffocate"

Because she screams, and all the noise from the multiple screaming has probably caught attention, the stalker has to kill her too. But, this was probably the one that caught the stalker's attention, so she gets buried alive in the cellar to suffocate because the stalker can't bring themselves to kill her.

But, that's just my interpretation.

The Birthday Massacre – Shallow Grave Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about forced prostitution.

"She was always good for nothing when the good broke bad
All she's got to lose is everything she never had
Every back turned to her"

This is talking about how society views all sex workers, even ones that were forced into the profession.

"We put her down in a shallow grave
She wears a dress like a body bag every day
And this way she won't have to run away
And she can keep her regrets at bay every day"

The first line is about society again, "we" put prostitutes down, even if they were forced into the profession as children. In many places if these girls go to get help, they can be arrested for being a prostitute still! Thus, the majority of them just don't try to get help, they wear their clothes "like body bags", hoping this is the last day they have to do this.

"Her favors bought and sold" is the most blatant line about prostitution.

"Tomorrow's not a new day
Or time to think things through
As patience starts to fall away
A day can feel like two"

And this is describing the view point of the prostitute - they are in a helpless situation, they will die like this, there is no help, no hope.

"When we gave her a new face
The past was out of view
She never fooled us
Because she could never fool herself"

And this is about the few that get out of the industry by going to the police. They send her to jail, she serves her time, they give her a "new face", but she's still viewed as a "whore" because she never felt she was anything else - after all when she went to get help, she was imprisoned.
