Neil Diamond – Canta Libre Lyrics 15 years ago
Sorry for the soap box...

No, I don't think that was anymore than a fleeting thought for Neil Diamond here; he was thinking of himself and the difficulties he experienced at the time. when in the grip of oppresive struggles in life, then 'freedom' becomes a 'glass sealing' that you can't break... like the only freedom you have are the thoughts in your head, thoughts musings and songs are the only escape.

Neil Diamond – Canta Libre Lyrics 15 years ago
I Can't believe that nobody has commented here, can't y'all hear a man crying out?

He's in pain and seeking the most basic of human sentient needs... F R E E D O M !!!

To the human soul, this is more important than food, water or shelter.

PETA Waxs rapsodic about animal liberation, what about mans?

This is not necessarily Political freedom either. It's the freedom of the human spirit. Yes it mentions freedom for his family, and on some level he maybe thinking of True Liberation from the oppressors that have been allowed to take hold in the countries to our south, because governments are more intereste in involving themselves in the pursuits of a hunger for oil etc. rather than the freedom that they profess to be so universally important. em...

Emmylou Harris – Sweet Old World Lyrics 15 years ago
This is such a bittersweet song of love and loss of someone painfully close to the 'character' of Emmylou Harris' song.

To me, having had more than my share of tragedy and difficulty in life, I can truly feel her spirit; in a very real way, I 'see' her, her intensity, his pain, because in so many ways it is mine too. At 15 I had an unavoidable, 'radical' frontal lobotomy to excise a 3-in-1 tumor from my brain to save my life. As a result I have no emotions; but hey, I'm lucky to have enough left of 'me' to speak of... I have also studied philosophy. This song has always somehow 'touched/moved' me in ways that no one can understand. Anyway...
First, I would add a pertinent famous quote:

'Some of the greatest battles will be fought within the silent chambers of your own soul' (to some this may be interpreted as mind? Both would be correct.).
Ezra Taft Benson

This song is resoundingly about suicide, and those left behind to pick up the pieces. I know this pain too. I do know this much... anything that causes us to think about thinking, about being, about appreciating what we have, and are... that can only be a good thing for us. Those lucky enough to escape true tragedy, well the true meaning may well fit in their paradigm. However, for those of us that for whatever plan God has for us, and so we live with true hardship, this song has added profundity - added salience. Yes I am a very devout Christian who has faced death no less than 4 times in my as yet still young life!

2 observations about people I have made over the years are that for many, and none of us are entirely immune from this:

We fail to notice that we failed to notice. (My own not yet famous quote)

and

To appreciate life, with all its pain and hardship, is to thank God without saying a word! (also my own)

Just think, for some of us (me too), we have met with the suicide of friends, and are left with the feeling that we didn't see it coming and so we live with the pain of that 'failing to notice...'
To me, this further serves to highlight the multidimensional thinking of Neil Diamond. Whichever way you look at a great deal of his songs, but especially this one [Sweet Old World] we see what we believe/think/feel (I had my emotions surgically removed during the removal of the truly massive brain tumor).

Jewel – Daddy Lyrics 15 years ago
Bunny-lo, I see where you are coming from; truly I do. however, I would just like to say this, if your 'parent' (abuser of any kind or relationship/proximity to you) has in fact changed who you became as a result of their abuse, then you are not who you could (perhaps 'should' in the mind of the song's character?) have become or be, then in the transition from victim to survivor of this abuse, it is necessary for the individual to face their demons and or wreckage, and recognize that it wss not them that did it - which is what abusers try to convince you of.

No, rather it is the abuser (here 'Daddy') where the responsibility or guilt (the 'legal interpretation' of the word) must be placed and well vented if they are ever to move on.

Victims of any tragedy must avoid viewing their lives as 'destroyed forever'; this would surely render themselves as victims forever, never to be released, never to become a survivor. Rather, find what it is in life that is beautiful, pure and good if you will, and despite the indelible fact that you will never be the same again, that not all is lost, they csn even smile and enjoy themselves again.

I truly wish you better ('well' seems a little trite) and pray this helps.

Jewel – Daddy Lyrics 15 years ago
if we are to become survivors in life, this 'facing our demons' exercise, painful, counterintuitive and downright fearful to some, is imperative to truly emancipate us from the grip of abuse or true tragedy that continues well after the abuse/tragedy has finished and gone.

to me, this is what Jewel is 'doing' through her song. She may not have been abused, but she knows true tragedy and hardship. If ever you have experienced true tragedy, you can see it in others, even if/when they sometimes try to hide it.

Jewel – Daddy Lyrics 15 years ago
Daddy refers to (to me anyway) anyone who abuses a person in anyway, over any greater length of time. We are more than merely 'Nature or Nurture', this equillibrium is at times usurped by the predators around us, amongst us, even within the family. Such prolonged abuse of any kind necessarily results in changing who we become; but we still have a choice:

implosion (with a gaping big old black hole inside us that nothing can fill - a life in ruins.

or...

becoming survivors. Jewel here (at least to me) is expressing her depth of understanding this tragedy. In her sone, which on the surface sounds psychotic, verging on heinous...yet really she's cracking open the 'chest' inside our hearts that we pack up our pain, tragic experiences and even abuse; but also certainly the words we utter in the secret chambers of our souls that we would never dare say.

Neil Diamond – I Am... I Said Lyrics 15 years ago
In Response to IknowIknow (and others), but certainly in relation to Neil diamond and this song, I Am, I Said, We could very easily wax rhapsodic about the God/Jesus or JudeoChristian conotations of "I Am' and altough Judaism recalls Jesus differently to Christians. 'I Am' is Him, the God of scriptures (To Christians this includes Jesus...Yes I am a very devout Chrisian who has faced death no less than 4 times in my as yet still young life)

To me, this furtehr serves to highlight the multidimentional thinking of Neil Diamond. Whichever way you look at a great deal of his songs, but especially this one [I am, I Said] we see what we believe/think/feel (I had my emotions surgically removed in the removal of a massive brain tumor).

My reply is in support of Shilo507's and your view of what happens within a person. despiite any religious views, a somewhat famous and very apt quote:

Some of the greatest battles will be fought within the silent chambers of your own soul (to some this may be interpreted as mind? Both would be correct.).
Ezra Taft Benson

To me, Neil Diamond's depth of 'I Am', his depth of being is able to be seen in the intensity of his eyes. having had more than my share of tragedy and difficulty in life, I can truly feel his wisdom and profundity. He has managed to put to words much of what we experience or feel, yet can't express; particularly in the example of IAIS!
