I must've missed the first part of this song, because when I got to the end I was like wait..what?!? This song is way more intense then it appears at first glance. |

They would bring this one in from far away, with the main lick crackling in the distance. After they ripped it up for a bit it would fade away like a distant storm. Nothing quite like the Dead playing this tune. |

I always loved the verse "I can tell your future, just look what's in your hand." Your present actions determine your future. (I can't tell you how many times I heard that verse live with a joint in my hand. Eventually though I'd hear it and I'd have my partner in my arms....) |

"Can you tell me honestly that you wanna be free?"
To be free of society's conventions, you must adopt the life of the homeless. Do you really want that? |

I had been listening to this tune for a while when I came upon a review of the album. According to that, this sing was supposed to be about the pit of alcoholism. I always thought it was just about needing a drink... |

The blood line comes right after a line about race. I like the allusion to color of burning alcohol because it goes right back to the message at the beginning of the song. Social status, money, race ....don't mean nothing because we all have our vices. |

This song speaks to gaps in communication/understanding in the father-son relationship. As a father you try to prepare your son to be a man. As a son it can be difficult to tell your father what he means to you. These things become glaringly apparent once the loss occurs. Love will see you through the words unsaid. |

I've always thought this song is about the wisdom of women and the ability for them to see the big picture. |
