| Paolo Nutini – Iron Sky Lyrics | 11 years ago |

@[blue412:742] I focused on this part of the song as well. I really appreciate his use of the word "machine" because it can be both about the society as a system and the digital age's information overload. I wrote more about my thoughts in this post: http://tproll.wordpress.com/2014/12/17/through-this-iron-sky-thats-fast-becoming-our-minds-paolo-nutini/ |

If sound can take the shape of light and give you a loving hug...this song got it. Anyone else notice the poetic metrical feet of the words? I go into more detail about it here and would like to hear your thoughts about it: http://tproll.wordpress.com/2014/12/25/if-light-and-sound-could-hug-you-in-a-warm-blanket/ |

| Adele – Set Fire to the Rain Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I figured the rain is a symbol for change and fire represents the chaos and destruction needed to make the change (in this case, break-up). http://rainischange.wordpress.com/2012/03/20/i-set-fire-to-the-rain-adele/ |

I really liked how this song explains something about how a woman can turn into a cat-lady. http://rainischange.wordpress.com/2012/03/12/a-river-she-cried-left-her-with-a-heart-made-of-ashes-and-fire-ryan-adams/ |

I really liked this interpretation from a friend of mine. My friend and I were chilling one night listening to a bunch of RA's old stuff and then this new one when we asked ourselves the same question about the river. http://rainischange.wordpress.com/2012/03/12/a-river-she-cried-left-her-with-a-heart-made-of-ashes-and-fire-ryan-adams/ |

| Mumford & Sons – White Blank Page Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I think it alludes to the Arthurian Legends and the whole concept of what it means to be truthful and thus, faithful and loyal. In the Medieval Ages, the idea of "truth" had more than one meaning. Being true to a lover, a king, a kingdom, and oneself... http://tproll.wordpress.com/2011/05/08/her-white-blank-page-and-a-swelling-rage-mumford-sons/ |

I agree. Another thing to also think about is the notion of "ghosts." At first glance at the words, it's easy to just think that it's about past exes. But the line "Turned out I’d been following him and he’d been following me" makes me think that ghosts are not just about the past (some people would argue that there is no division between past, present, and future). I won't take up more whitespace. Here's where I develop this idea: http://tproll.wordpress.com/2010/12/21/ghosts-by-laura-marling/ |

| Ryan Adams – My Winding Wheel Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think it's a marriage proposal. The part that goes, "so buy a pretty dress/wear it out tonight/for all the boys you think/could outdo me..." sounds as if she is trying to make him jealous. And she is. But it also sounds as if he KNOWS that this relationship is IT. He's not worried that she will find someone who will give her more than the relationship they already have. The part that goes, "well the children laugh and sing/a song that ushers in her driving rain..." seals it as a marriage proposal. Rain...represents the decision-making event (since rain often used in literature to represent turning points) and the children refers to the idea of a family. I have a few more words on this song here: http://tproll.wordpress.com/2010/05/29/eyes-that-dance-with-no-clothes-ryan-adams-in-my-winding-wheel/ |

I am so confused by this part: But the love of your life lives, but lies no more Than where she lay your flowers grows, The arms that fed and the babes that wed, The backs that bled keeping her in tow, The next part goes, "But I am your keeper/And I hold your face away from light." It sounds as if she is keeping him from seeing the truth. What truth? You look at the part before this line and it sounds as if the guy thought that the woman he loves was dead because it says, "The love of your life lives but lies no more." So if you put it together, it sounds as if the narrator is keeping this information away from him so that she can be with this man. The part about "arms fed, babes wed, backs that bled" sounds like it is about the life that the man and his children went through after his wife died (or was thought to be dead). "Backs that bled keeping her in tow" is about the struggle that the family went through to as they lived on after she died. The struggle to live with this memory of her ("Keeping her in tow"). By the way, the lyrics can be found at her website as well: http://www.lauramarling.com/ under the Listen link. |

| Ryan Adams – Don't Ask for the Water Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I thought of Virginia Woolf as well! I don't know about the dress, but the sack full of stones sounds like Ms. Woolf. The question is, why would Virginia Woolf be using her death as a weapon? I think Ryan Adams must have admired her to reference her. So one can interpret this and say that she makes lovers/admirers cry from grief. This is also not the first woman writer who Mr. Adams has written about. He also wrote about Sylvia Plath...I guess he has a thing for women writers. What I don't get is the first half of the song. |

One line intrigues me; it is the one that goes "flowers in the love of my arms." Who is holding the flowers? Him or the woman? Just the phrase "love of my arms" is interesting. I'm thinking "love of my arms" refers to the woman. The woman is holding the flowers and he in turn is holding the woman. Well, there it is! I guess I just wrote myself through it. I love how he takes a cliche image (in this case a man holding his love in his arms) and makes it his own. |
