Apparently I get something totally different from this song... It's the moment when you fall in love with someone. Like... that overwhelming moment, when you feel like your heart is going to explode. It's a really heavy, crushing, kind of terrifying moment.... and how you can love someone like that the whole time you love them. Like... ten years later, when things have become comfortable... you can still look at them and remember that moment you saw their face the first time, that explosion when you realized you loved them... And suddenly you feel it again. Then you grow old, and it's still there. The sun sets, and you'll grieve for the person you love leaving, but you won't grieve for the history. The life you had together, each moment. It reminds me of a lyric from 'What Sarah Said' by Death Cab... ' But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all.' Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic though? heh |

First off, this is possibly the BEST song interpretation I've ever read. Fantastic, really fantastic. I would add one thing to it, and it's the thing I love the most about Rufus Wainwright... the encapsulation of feelings into words. For example: (Thank you for this bitter knowledge, Guardian angels who left me stranded, It was worth it, feeling abandoned, Makes one hardened but what has happened to love) This also really sums up how it feels when you've been used up, tossed aside, and some time as passed... allowing you to look back on this horrible moment and see the value of it... see how it changed you. The whole song has that feeling, that "You broke me for a little while, but I'm stronger now... strong enough to tell you to either do right by me (surprise me) or get away from me." The whole "go or go ahead and try me"... to me, there's some real anger there. But that's just the way the song FEELS. And that's the amazing thing about Rufus isn't it? These complex, mixed emotions.... and the SOUND of a song, the rises and builds, suddenly you FEEL that emotion. I honestly can't listen to this song without crying. |

Love this song... and totally identify with it! She's talking about the memory of this hot, passionate love... The first verse is about how intense the relationship was, how it cooled off and ended, but she's saying she still feels the heat, still burns for that love. So in the 2nd verse she's talking about how he's a totally different person now, but she remembers the way he used to be, the way it was with them together. I love the line "Still dancing on the aftertaste." I think it's such a clever way of describing a feeling. If you've ever had a love so intense it was like the center of the sun... you never really forget that feeling. And if you're lucky you'll love someone else... but you'll never love again that way. That first explosive love. She's saying that she'll remember the taste of it forever, long for it forever, even though it's gone. |

This is a gorgeous song, really gorgeous. I think it's about a mother, but it's always seemed to me that it was about how a child sees his mother. Innocently, gently, and with need. But you should listen to the song really, the sound of it has a physical feeling of symbiosis. Very circular, very soft. If you have children, or you've ever watched a woman feed her newborn, it's just almost sacred. Inevitably there will be this soft moment where you see how woman and child are connected, and time kind of stops. This song is the literal sound of that moment. Can't say enough good things about Phillips, he's got magic for moments like that. |

| I think this song is about two people who, individually, are just a big mess. But together they save each other, maybe fix each other a little. | |

I think this song is using Berkowitz as a metaphor. I think the song is saying... I'm a slave to my demons, the same way Berkowitze was a slave to his. The Shiva reference is also interesting, because while Shiva is the destroyer, the destruction is done to clear the way for a new life (told the boss off made my move). The overwhelming feeling I get from this song is "I don't know what I want to do with my life, but I'm driven to throw everything away and try to find something else... even though I don't have anything to find." |

When you're gone, I'm fine My heart won't unfold, 'cuz I'm fine My thoughts have more time to echo and soak and stain this space I'm so fond of you, I miss you so, but I'm fine When we surrender to worms, I hope you'll know I missed you well I missed you well I missed you well yeah I miss you I want to wake up next to you and make you scream Now that's sacred Still I wait for you |
