| She & Him – Me and You Lyrics

I'd say this song was written for a friend that was depressed and possibly doing themselves harm in some way. When Zooey tried to help, the person probably didn't take it well. But now, the person has forgiven her. In the first verse it seems like the person is doing a bit better, and Zooey urges "her" to keep on fighting to feel good. Put this happiness to the test to see if it will last. Chorus is all reinforcement. "You gotta be kind to yourself." The affected person has to take it easy on themself if they ever want to get better. Depression is like a dead end cycle. If you feel guilty about being depressed, you get more depressed. And harming yourself in any way is never the answer. It appears that the good feelings didn't last because by the second verse, the person has the blues again. They tried to hold up as long as they could, but they let all the little things build up. Zooey just ends the song on a hopeful, urgent note with the chorus again. It's a very good song... open ended, and relatable.

I was initially shocked by the reference to "Cribs", but that was before I understood why it was used. The first line sets the scene, as in Zooey is talking on the phone and watching the television. In the show, which is "Cribs", the featured person has a gold plated cieling. He also apparently has a broken heart that he doesn't know about. This is where Zooey gets deeper... but it is important to realize that she was purposely setting a modern scene to show how superficial many entertainers are because they are blinded by the fame and wealth. The song's entire purpose is trying to urge the current generation of entertainers to break free from that path. There are so many opportunities to make a difference in the world, and they're just waiting for you at every corner. That theme extends to all humanity. |

One other little tidbit that I got out of this song is that all that fame and fortune can be gone in an instant. It can "run away", as it's put in the song. Don't take anything for granted. |

Another possible explanation is that the brand new shoes are just an example of some superficial material possession. Zooey Deschanel wrote this song and let's face it, she has fame and fortune. She can basically have anything money can buy... But she realizes that life is deeper than that. "We are all made of air" We are all equal no matter what our monetary or social status may be. "It's nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing at all" She knows that all of the material things don't matter. I'm guessing this song is basically thanking someone who told her in the past that she shouldn't let fame and fortune go to her head. A great lesson, and I think it is effectively portrayed through this song. |

"I want to be where your heart is home..." That is one of the greatest statements ever made. Why? Because... Isn't that the ideal relationship? The kind of relationship where all you need is eachother and no matter where you go, your home is where your heart is. That is lovely. And the point is personified throughout the song. "I can be your state and I can be your nation." True love is your identity and the only thing you ever need to feel at home. Thank you again Zooey! |
