swap canadians and americans in that statement and thats what I want to say about my canadian brethren in this thread.... The world may be divided by boarders, full of different races, religions and governments, but I'm sure stupid is among all of them. |

I like this interpretation. He typically writes in (what I believe are) relatively vague and simply worded phrases. Not say it's not utterly brilliant. He paints a scene based on a theme, but they frequently aren't a true story. They weave in and out of personal experience but written as the theme of those experiences. I don't think Bon Iver is a literal interpretation writter, but more decifering the motif (as kdundy put it). It may have been written because of a relationship (a lot of this album is). But I think the song is about isolation, separation & perhaps startling realization (being blindsided). For me somedays123 is the closest to what I get from it. |

I also think you are right, but feel like it's a love that can't be... maybe she's in a relationship... hence the problem with the long stay. They flirt with trying to be friends, but they can't escape these feelings. Works for my life... So there's my .02 |

WHAT! No comments yet. This song is brilliant, albeit a little heavy on puns and cliche statements, but they are well used. I don't think this song is all that deep (which is part of it's brilliance). It's about being on the road. Missing your loved ones, and losing yourself in the process. Struggling to keep a connection with them & you. |

I agree with eastcoastguy. The brilliance of this song is how he stops trying to use ineffective words to explain himself and simply says "this is how i feel....listen". Then the violin solo. The music is the way he feels, and describes it better than words ever could. Awesome! |

I think it is about a relationship coming to an end, only 1 person doesn't see it coming (When the walls come down, You'll be tired and unprepared). But it's like it's too much effort to deal with so he's just coasting. He thinks that she would never suspect him to leave (You know you've yet to convince me, To leave my mind at the door, I'll leave it next to my shoes, The last place that you'll look). At the end of the song it changes, like its come out, and 'he slightly regrets the relationship ending (My cover's been blown, Torn off in the howling wind, Well with the benefit of hindsight, I should have been better prepared, When the walls come down, All I can do is stop and stare) Well that's my .02 |

I agree with DeathsRose, I think it's a response to the Midnight Organ Fight (So the hymns that I sung, Prayers for the fucked, from a bitter, forked tongue, Sing of history now). More specifically, I think it's a continuation of Floating in the Forth. There is a lot of water and suicide references and the backing vocals follow a very similar format. FITF: The first verse talks about someone leaving and being 'shrink wrapped out of air'. NM: First verse he is better than when he almost drown in his house. |
