This song, to me, is about loving someone, and them saying they love you, but they don't. and you can obviously see it, but you just love them so much that you can't leave them, you have to keep trying, imagining it will get better. She's just playing along, and not putting any effort. He wishes her plans will fall through the roof- so that she'll spend time with him instead. And in the part 'i can just see it now.." is what he's imagining the relationship, its getting better, but then all of a sudden its back to the way it was - where she's ignoring him.

I believe the last verse says: You curse the DARK, not the dogs. it makes sense because it says she kisses him on the eye and curses the dark.

This song reminds me of everyone i've ever had feelings for, and how hard it is to let them go, or see them with other people. It also reminds me of how I have a lack of love in my life at the moment, and how it 'better be coming very soon'. [: awesome song! |

He's been working so hard in his relationship (tired from the day on the track)
and now he's starting to give up, because he realized that he'll never be anything she's dreamed of (middle distance runner)
He put everything into the relationship with the next verse, and realizes that it isn't going to work out, and there isn't exactly a future between them.
He still loves her though. even if she says she wants to come back to him, later on after they've grown apart (woman you've become), he knows it wont work out because he's a middle distance runner still. but he'll love her anyways, and he knows it won't ever work. |

So this song, I believe, is about how people constantly lie or are confused by their feelings ("So, don't tell me you will, when you know that you won't" ; "Don't say that you do, when you know that you don't" ; "Don't tell me to yell, when you want me to whisper" and "Don't spin the bottle if you don't want to kiss her")
It also seems to be about how people have been letting him down when he's been counting on them, and about how he doesn't even understand what is going on in his life, which is the first few lines.
