Black Leaf Falls Lyrics

It weighs too much this time
My hands are broken
She'll disappear again
Before we've spoken
The night we took that year
In Black Leaf Falls
All of the trees were bare
Next to the dance hall

I saw you outside
The bathroom stalls
You were just standing there
Out in the hall
You leaned your hip against
Against the wall
I'd love you anywhere
But Black Leaf Falls

Her perfume was so
I smell it still
I put her leaf upon
The window sill
I found it there today
Its color gone
It's in the water now
It's been too too long

I saw you outside
The bathroom stall
You were just standing there
Out in the hall
You leaned your hip against
Against the wall
I'd love you anywhere
But Black Leaf Falls

I'll fall asleep tonight
See where they take me
Fly with the maple seeds
See if she wakes me

I saw you outside
The bathroom stalls
You were just standing there
Out in the hall
You turned your eyes to me
I felt it all
I'd love you anywhere
But Black Leaf Falls
Oh, Black Leaf Falls

Despite all the effort put forward into a relationship, it doesn't work out because perhaps it wasn't ever meant to be. Two people have grown apart from one another and the passion they feel fades away like the color of a leaf in autumn. This fact is difficult to accept and the weight of it is exhaulting.

I don't know. Maybe it's about ending the relationship. They took a trip to "Black Leaf Falls" and he'd "love her anywhere but Black Leaf Falls" maybe a pivotal location at the end of a doomed relationship. Still, very catchy.

I see this song as loving someone from afar. Like, they had a one-night stand, and then it stopped and they never saw each other again. He can only admire the memories.

Life and Death I believe she was sick... dying You can tell its not just about a break up.. the mourning is soooo powerful, black leaf falls is the sign of death and the changing of the seasons. My heart aches when I hear these powerful lyrics, perhaps she will wake him in his dreams

Hmm. Sounds like Black Leaf Falls is a place that holds bad sexual/romantic memories for Alex, and he just doesn't want to go back.

To me this song was about a mysterious one night stand at a town called Black Leaf Falls. The two strangers meet at a dance hall. He spots her standing out in the hall and there is a sudden but very powerful connection. The very last chorus when he says "You turned your eyes to me. I felt it all" really has a profound meaning. These two strangers have never meet but the second they make eye contact just have a mysterious understanding about each other. They hook up (possibly in the bathroom) and then she disappears and he never sees her again except for in his dreams: "I'll fall asleep tonight See where they take me Fly with the maple seeds See if she wakes me". The song is a strikingly beautiful mix of intimacy, mystery, sex, loneliness, longing, and nostalgia about a dreamlike meeting between two strangers and the love they find.
