| Shane & Shane – Embracing Accusation Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| i first heard this song the other day and had to go to itunes almost immediately and buy it. it proclaims a message that we cannot hear enough: that we are wretched sinners that can do nothing about our present state, but Salvation can give us a new identity in Christ. once we have that Salvation, reminders of our mistakes are just reminders that those mistakes don't matter anymore. i've struggled with the guilt of my past before, but this song is a message that can turn that guilt into praise and joy. | |

| i tend to think of this song as a lamentation of those times when we just refuse to spend time with God (prayer, reading His Word, etc.). i also think it goes back in forth in perspective because the first verse sounds like Jesus telling us not to settle for earthly pleasures, but most of the song, including the chorus and bridge, sounds like a person crying out for the joy and eternal perspective that come with fellowship with God. | |

the most prominent aspect of this song is the consistent allusion to Francisco Goya's 'The Shootings of May Third in Madrid' (1814). "Six men on their knees eye's shinin in the high beams of the searchlight. cop's shadows on the wall, several stories tall instilling such a fright. one's kicked in the gut, he's all cut up by the corner cop. One stands in defense in a broken sentence asks not to be shot." "Arms thrown up in a ever fearful protest as the firing squad would ever think to notice. As if you could summon the likes of moses to put blood back in his friends veins." these are apt descriptions of what is going on in the painting. also, "he wasn't begging..." is probably urmston's own interpretation of the painting and the most prominent figure in it. see it here: http://www.goyatobeijing.org/gallery/images/goya.jpg |
