Faith No More – The Last To Know Lyrics 15 years ago
Amazing song with amazing lyrics. The guitar solo and singing are all gold :)
My interpretations are below:

"Where it grows on trees, but never blooms"

'Love' is all around, but rarely lasts or turns into something lasting. Lots of relationships, few end up surviving over time.

"Where it hurts the least for whoever saw it first"

Whoever first realizes a relationship is not going to work has time to think and come to terms with it before actually making the move to break up. Without proper communication, the other person is often left in the dark while the first contemplates and then initiates the breakup.

"First to go and the last to know"

First to go refers to being dumped. Last to know means he was the last to see it coming and was blind-sided by it.

"Lasts longer than a lifetime
Takes the least amount of effort
Feels better than a bargain
Just to know it's there"

Referring to true love or perhaps the love that is idealized in our minds. Sometimes it is this easy, oftentimes it is not. Love lasts forever (or perhaps the narrator's does), is easy to do (or perhaps showing frustration over what went wrong), and can comfort someone just knowing that they are loved.

"Can't you see
There's only one me
And that me is me"

In relationships / breakups lots of times a person is accused of changing, or no longer being the person the other thought they were. Here he pleads that he is still the same person, and by definition could never be otherwise.

"I know where, but I cannot share"

The person who initiates the breakup is inevitably missed horribly by the person blind-sided by the breakup. The dumped person needs emotional comfort and wishes he/she could see the other person, but they are gone, doing who knows what, moving on with their life, while the other has to begin the process of accepting what has happened. The shock of being apart and not doing everything together. This is spoken from the person who initiated the break up.

"You'll call me, I'll stand in line til then. I'll be waiting."

Back to the perspective of the person who was dumped. He/she is convinced the other person will eventually come to their senses and return. The narrator expresses devotion to "wait in line" for the person rather than pursuing other people.

"Can't you see, all circuits are busy. Please try back again."

The response to the last line, showing that the person is uninterested in returning and that the breakup is final. Won't pick up or return calls, in a figurative or perhaps even literal sense.

Helmet – Throwing Punches Lyrics 15 years ago
It was listed as Page Hamilton on the Underworld Soundtrack, but was also released on Helmet's 2004 album Size Matters.

So it's a Helmet song.

Matthew Good – Volcanoes Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the song is about struggling to find a partner in life. After a while it feels hopeless.

He compares the feat of finding someone or making a relationship work to climbing a mountain (volcano) and the act of the relationship itself and "opening up" to the other person as diving into it. "Born to dive" shows his propensity to take risks and trust and open up to people, and how it inevitably backfires.

Amazing song!

Isis – 20 Minutes/40 Years Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this one is about the collapse of one relationship and the despair / apprehension over having to start over again--something that gets harder and harder as you get older. The beginning talks of the breakup / time running out. Then he talks of how he is unprepared to go on the journey again. Seeking new life could be finding someone else. And at the end he mentions how he wants to pluck her from the wolves, perhaps save her from some situation and be something important to her. And the last bit about hearts seems to talk of a joining of the two (two arteries flow with the pulse of one mighty heart).

I always thought he was saying "I saved your life" instead of seeking new life, but whatever.

I don't specifically know what the title of the song refers to, but I've always had the feeling it had to do with a short amount of time affecting a longer amount of time. That is, in a mere 20 minutes, the next 40 years of your life can be changed :(

I think this is about not letting things get to you and just enjoying life. The blissful bubble makes me think of a protective shell.. perhaps provided by a loved one. You feel safe and that everything is fine when you're around them.

Tiamat – Phantasma De Luxe Lyrics 15 years ago
I absolutely love this song, both musically and lyrically. The music is simple, but very beautiful and emotional. The guitar solo is definitely very David Gilmour-y but fits this very well and is a great nod to Pink Floyd which has one of Edlund's biggest musical influences.

I love how the lyrics mix in the archaic and old english words both to flavor and obscure some of the meaning. It indeed makes it seem very poetic. Since they are so ridiculous I will try to go more or less line by line to show you my thoughts on what it all might mean.

"This dole crowner gallows me"
It is our fate (dole) to one day die. The author is afraid (to gallow is to be afraid). Crowner can either refer to a coroner/undertaker or perhaps the act of dying/being subject to the fate of death. I'm not sure.

"As this mere welkin hallowed be"
Referring to the purity (mere) and holiness (hallowed) of heaven (welkin: vault in the sky) perhaps as somewhere he'd like to reach.

"Whereupon I trick and train and tire"
I think this is just referring to the toils of life, maybe struggling to reach heaven or just to live day to day.

"To limn my umbered love in fire"
Illuminate my shadowed love. Showing your love (perhaps to someone in particular.. lover is mentioned later) or being a better person? It might be urging people to not hide their feelings for others prior to death.

"Before this noble mare bewrays
As I clearly see it all decays"
One of my favorite lines. I believe he is symbolizing his body as the mare (horse). That is, it is a vessel for his soul/life. Before his noble body betrays or fails him (bewray), i.e. physical death. He knows his body will fail eventually as death is unavoidable. This might refer back to the previous line of showing your love before you die.

"In debile coil of smoke suspires"
Referring to life going out like a puff of smoke or a weakly exhaled breath.

"May our last orison quickens as we
are drumbling near this poise of free"
Drumbling is the act of doing something in a fashion or manner that makes it obvious the person does not know what he or she is doing. The poise of free I think is referring to freedom in death. Free of the weight/burdens of life. As we approach death, may we say a prayer (orison).

"Quell me maculate slowly dyer"
Maculate has to do with staining or can also refer to impurities. Perhaps sin, maybe blood. I don't know. Dyer also has to do with coloring something. Quelling this may have something to do with washing away his impurities, forgiveness, etc.

"Case my remains with sharpened brier"
Placed in a casket with thorns or plants growing around it? Burial?

"Atone me to my throes curtail"
Death throes meaning the agony of death or dying. He knows it is inevitable, but please make it quick (curtail) and painless.

"To dim and dire fields I vail"
Vail has to do with submitting (to death), also sinking (put into the ground), and also giving a hat's off to something (acceptance and respect for death and the dead). Interestingly all three of these definitions work. He is submitting to death and his fate underground.

"And my eale's but a slumbering lier."
Eale is ale. I guess this could have to do with how people drink to get over sad events, or to forget about the woes of life completely. It puts your mind to sleep.

"Then so lingered here but none
To buckle back what had begun"
It supposes that death is not the end.

"In molten aeons caged desire
Dared Phantasma, us much higher."
Molten can mean molten or it could also mean overcome with sadness. Aeons could mean ages or it could refer to Angels or spirits of God (this definition is particular to the Gnostic religion). Perhaps the spirits overcome with sorrow lift the dead into heaven?

"Ceased to milch the clover flower"
The clover sometimes refers to the holy trinity. Not sure what other significance it might have here.

"Neither raindrops nor my lover
Shall restore what has been done
When we're all keeled in freezing sun"
No matter what happens after death, there is no coming back from it. You can cry for your lost love, but it won't save them, and won't save you. Keeled in freezing sun makes me think of having the life sucked out of you, or being lifeless in a coffin or something.

Killing Joke – The Judas Goat Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe this album was recorded in Prague. Not sure what specifically the statues in the town square are, but perhaps they inspired the song. I would guess they are military related or to commemorate a war. The chorus and second verse have to do with humans preying off of other humans, specifically how rich politicians send the poor off to fight their wars using deceit and false hope.

Judas meaning a betrayer, and goat meaning a sacrificial animal.

Killing Joke – Gratitude Lyrics 15 years ago
Such an amazing song.. the music is so somber and heavy, with such an emotional chorus, especially when the last bit bears down on you: "a toast for the man who.." This is definitely a bittersweet goodbye song, either to his friends and family or even the fans. I think Jaz must see his fans as equals and it's a beautiful thing.

This is the sort of feeling that one would hope anyone would be able to feel during their final hours, while in the company of others. Unfortunately it is not always so.

I hope this is the last song they ever play live :)

Killing Joke – You'll Never Get to Me Lyrics 15 years ago
The obvious reaction to most of life's perils is to despair. This song however is about powering through this and finding hope, and celebrating good times / memories and commiserating over the bad with friends and family.

You celebrate life itself and the will to carry on. Never let it get to you :)

It's "ridicule the green"

There is no 'away'

What is Mechula? Closest thing I can find is a reference to a Hamas suicide bombing in 1995. Word seems incredibly out of place in the lyrics though.

Amazing song... here is the missing verse (it angers me so many sites ignore this)

Myriad experiences of billions of humans
Recorded in the memory, the compassion of their God
Beauty defined by disfigurement and symmetry
Re-evaluate the history and re-assess the symbols

Dredg – Light Switch Lyrics 16 years ago
The first verse has to do with brain washing, and the remaining verses make me think of blind faith, possibly in religion. The choruses are great--very heart felt. Could possibly apply to a relationship, but the verses make me think they were are pointing more toward the blind faith idea and people devoting themselves to religion. The first chorus in particular is very sad and poignant to me. Great writing.

Dredg – I Don't Know Lyrics 16 years ago
Definitely a tribute to agnosticism. I think the lyrics really make the song, but there are some great guitar textures and sounds throughout the song that make it great with headphones.

I love how the music changes up, getting more emotional, during the "If I'll go..." part.
